Wouldn't It be Great if Posts didn't Have a 7 day Voting Expiry Timeline?
It would be great if post could receive voting support beyond 7 days.
I wonder if it would be possible for posts to remain eligible for voting support beyond 7 days? My thinking is as follows:
We live in an information age and the things we are creating here for the blockchain are in some ways timeless as the blockchain is the record for all time as far as I know. I suppose it's possible if the internet got shutdown there would be no access to reading the blockchain records. However, I regard post's like "digital assets" in a way as the content is there forever. It would be cool from my perspective if and when I come across a post some months later after it was created that I can send an upvote of support to the content creator.
My thinking about the voting system expands like this:
Maybe there could be a post pay out window of 7 days like it is now....and then after 7 days...it turns into a monthly payout window....or maybe it just starts a new 7 day window and cycle...so it's an ongoing thing. Obviously older posts don't necessarily get as much attention as when it is new...but a good post in many instances is some what timeless. It is my opinion that it would be quite cool if you have this great timeless post that it's possibilities are open ended in terms of receiving support from new viewership.
Maybe it's not technically possible...but I question that: maybe there is in fact a way - an adjustment could perhaps be made?

I was talking about this recently with a friend I brought to the platform. I think ultimately having a monthly payout would be better but I think it might lead to abuse.
hey, I was at first put off about the arrangement, because I was viewing this as a youtube-sort of money maker, where I could put something out there, and just let it keep propagating and making money, but I had to adjust how I viewed steemit, and how I was thinking about using it, and now I'm alright with the expiration, because it makes business sense from a technical point of view.
now that I've learned about LBRY, DTube, DStream, and steepshot, I'm excited to use steemit as one of several central hubs to share information and content via the many blockchains available.
Perhaps there could be both - an initial 7 day payout and then an ongoing 30 day payout for posts. Best of both worlds :)
abuse point is difficult - it's like there will be bad actors until there isn't. I think a lot of that over time will be less and less - I think part of the issue with abuse is a result of our individual attitudes and relationships with ourselves and each other. I mean if we just look at how money has been created historically...it's been through war/violence....the war machine. So - we've got a serious paradigm shift here as a real tangible social experiment that is happening - I think it's possible for the nature of the human to improve for the better....and I think moving forward, perhaps with the creation of SMT's and also EOS - we will be able to create added support systems/structures to prevent and limit abuse.
I agree. The 7 day rule discourages people from giving a shit about older posts. The curation rules even discourage a lot of people from giving a shit about posts older than 30 minutes. I reckon the logic (from the developer's side) is that it encourages people to crank out more content, but the unintended consequence is that it encourages more shit content.
I have also thought of this as well, it seems a waste that authors can only be rewarded for a max of one week after their post was written. For any number of reasons that post may be missed by many readers and not get the payout it deserves.
One solution I was thinking of is the half life principle. Once a post is older than 7 days, it can still receive awards but at 50% of whatever the upvote percentage was. Say from 7 days to one month is the second half life, 1 month to 2 months the next half life and so on. This way the author can still get something out of it even though months have passed since it was written. Just an idea though, don’t know if it would work in reality
Your solution is a pretty good one.
Maybe I am missing something - but I can't think of any reason why open ended voting on posts wouldn't be better. It really does seem like an added benefit for everyone connected into the STEEM blockchain.
maybe it could be open ended - but you get your first payout after a week and then every 2 weeks...or maybe it could just keep rolling every week and over time, everybody's weekly payouts start building up pretty good.
especially so when we hit numbers like $100 Steem :)
Thanks for stopping by and sharing your input.
cheers.
I think it has to do with the daily supply of steem, but I am not too sure. Each day there are a limited number of new steem given out for the reward pool. If posts from months ago are still being rewarded that can take away a lot of potential rewards from newer posts. I am sure there is a good explanation for it somewhere, but I too would like to see something that can be rewarded for more than 7 days
I too thought that if posts were open ended that it would hurt the daily pool available for voting.
But then I realized: Oh shit - no it doesn't - because everyone is now eligible for open ended voting on posts...and so there's no loss because everybody wins.
If anything it's just a +1 improvement for everyone :)
I think there is more to it than this. What happens if you have received rewards for a payout, then remove your vote and vote for something again? you could earn rewards over and over.
A decaying reward pool might be a valid option though, but would need to ask some one with more technical knowledge than myself. I wonder if @ned has ever addressed this?
It's certainly a very time based platform. One solution might be to brush off old posts, review them, make any necessary changes and repost them, perhaps 12 months later. This would give readers the opportunity to see them who might have missed them the first time.
hmm interesting approach - hadn't considered something like that.
Though I really do wonder - if couldn't just open the possibility to vote on things whenever...seems like that's a win/win for everyone...because everyone who posts is open to receiving long term royalties.
also opens up the point if you've been active for a long while - and then go on vacation - probably still got some residual income with the old posts. especially so when we are sitting with $100 Steem prices.
would be cool because some post's are really incredible and even after year they remain special
Nice post. You deserve upvote. Vote for vote.
It is of course a good proposal !As it seems with this seven days ,many are draining the reward pool vastly what would happen if the period increases to 30 days !
However yes there are posts that holds many more informations and helpful content not getting the proper attention ! I do really like your idea but as it seems everything has good & bad option on its plate!
I don't really think it makes any difference on the draining of the rewards pool. In the long run - I think it makes the network better/stronger as it encourages even more so the creation of quality content...because the voting window doesn't expiry. With this type of regard to content creation it's about sharing thing's that are simply to share...and it gives everyone a chance to see it and it's not soo much about getting as many views in 7 days as possible.
I think it would be cool to have a hybrid model of sorts with the voting...where a post is paid out like it is now after 7 days - and then it's just like once a month or something like that....like a passive royalty.
Sure worth a try ,hope it gets established and we get to see the good results ;)
I'm into it! I feel like I always find out about the good stuff on Steemit after it's too late and can't offer up any goods
but bro i think that might not be possible otherwise lot's of algorithm would change
yes - adjustments are needed. It is possible.
well the idea is nice but lot's of implementation and reward pool has to be taken into consideration
yes - for sure
I think in the long run it strengthens the overall network - because the emphasis is increasingly so on sharing quality content.
