Are You An Active User? (Experiment #2)
2 Days ago i made a post about an "experiment" i am conducting regarding the activity in here. In case you missed the part 1 and wanna check it out click here. What i did was to simply ask for people reading this post or watching the title of it :P, to just make a comment. After nearly 2 days the number of total comments was 19, out of my 1600 followers, so as you can understand something seems off.
If you recall a couple of months ago the whole community tried to promote a voting that took place in netcoins in which the winner coin/crypto would earn a free listing that worth 30.000$. Thankfully, we won but the number of the total votes was a disaster and not even close to the 50k of daily active users. Note also that this contest promoted by many "famous" and influential Steemians as well as communities and they even rewarded those that voted.
In my previous post i said that from those 50k active daily users let's just exclude 10k of them that probably are bots or alt accounts. I also stated the following:
To be qualified as daily active account you just need to do at least one transaction per day. That means that a power up,power down, 1 upvote, 1 comment, 1 reply, 1 post,sending % of steem-sbd equals daily activity for your account.
We now have a total number of 40k daily active accounts but the reality is much worse than you thought. A lot of people use autovoting services that i am not against but it still mislead us in a way. If you have no free time or you follow too many people then it's more than ok to use autovoting services, it's a must! That way you can reward the people you love or at least find interesting.
The problem though is that by doing this the account counts as a daily active user even if you are at a cabin in the woods without any internet connection. Also, many people don't bother to do any manual research at all, maybe cause they are bored, maybe cause they don't have the time, maybe because they do everything automatically?
Thus, my speculation is that the daily active accounts are around 10k and even less. Moreover maybe that is an answer to some question you may be wondering. Questions like:
"Why nobody reads my posts while stats say 50k daily active accounts??"
"Why my posts don't get that much visibility?"
"Why from my *insert a number* followers only 10%-20% reads my stuff?"
"What are the reasons behind that low activity?"
Now i am gonna use more DRASTIC MEASURES to see if anyone will bother to leave a comment. As you know in my previous post i just wanted to see some activity from anyone by just commenting. Now i will take this a step further and use @steemitboard's ranking page to sort it out by the number of comments (i"ll try to exclude the bots,some fishy accounts and the ones i follow or follow me) and below i am gonna mention a lot of top ranking (by comments) Steemian names just to see what will happen!
Note that the reason i am doing this is because most of us use apps,bots,dapps that notify us when somebody mentions our names, either this called Gina-Bot, Steemworld etc etc. You can do the exact same things in the comment section, it will be fun! Will they bother to check why their names mentioned or not? Let's see what will happen!

Those people are among the top 400 users based on the number of their comments. I wanted to continue but doing it manually takes a lot of time. Also, the Koreans are all over the top spots! What's your key for engagement guys, share your secrets!
Once again the only thing i want is quite simple. I just wanna see if you are one of those active accounts. I don't care about upvoting or resteeming this post, all i want is to MAKE A COMMENT, anything that you like even an emoji will be just fine! You can also add others by using @andthenamehere and make the "experiment" your own!

@nonameslefttouse @valth as a matter of fact all the names i wrote are supposed to be active users and to be more specific daily active users. I opened around 400 tabs based on the number of comments via steemitboard, then i excluded all the bots, the ones i follow/followed and some accounts that seemed fishy or inactive (at least to be counted as daily active users), maybe i excluded some actives by mistake cause 400 tabs and checking them manually is a bit of tough work actually.
Now i could easily boost my first posts to see bigger activity but i hate bid-bots thus i tried it with 2 different ways. The first one was to simply ask for a comment and guess what. The majority were people that follow me, showing once again that mostly none search manually new posts.
In the second one i wanted to see if the most active users sorted by comments which i consider give a true sense of activity and engagement in the platform (i also checked a bit some of their comments to avoid the "good post sir") will actually check this if i tag them cause otherwise they won't.
What i wanna show is that the 50k of daily active accounts if we just stick to posting/upvoting/commenting/replying is far more less than that number, aproximately 10k or less and that number plus automation is one of the answers as to why many users don't get new followers, have the same people check their posts, have a feeling that the place is getting dead etc etc Add in that the bad interface and the bid-bots and there you have it!
Ahh before i forget it, as i said because i had so many tabs opened at a certain point i wasn't even checking the names only if they are active, not bots, not fishy etc etc. Now that i get to see some of the tags or replies i have and check the names i have to say i already know that @nonameslefttouse you are active, i have upvoted some of your posts in the past and i know the whole fight you give against the extreme use of bid-bots. @valth it's the first time i see you though :P Also i promise to check more thoroughly your profiles/post as well as the majority of people that commented here!

5 out of of the 25 current responders are from #thealliance. One thing we try to do is engage with our family. And, since you mentioned me, @partiko was nice enough to tell me before Gina tried hitting on me again. But, you bring up valid points about activity and I think a lot of it has to do with there not being a sufficient notifications system. The app I'm on right now is about the best I've used where I don't have to leave the chain.

I haven't though that much about the notifications part. It is very important but i think in order to reach that point we need to be more active in order to have people to tag :P My main issue is the number of daily active users that are way less than 50k and the automation of everything. I believe that some dapps/curation trails/autovoting services lead to an "ease" and people don't bother to engage that much. Those are just tools though so i am not against it or anything, i am talking about the mindset of any individual!

Is there any specific rules of the community cause i wanna check based on my time if i could be up to this or not. For example if there is a rule to upvote and comment 5-6 posts per day of the community i can't do that both because of time and cause i have already a bunch of people i follow (add the drop in prices, my upvote don't worth a lot now). If it is 2 people though or something more "open" then i think i can do it

Well it is true like you said and moreover I do like your drastic measure to call upon the users.
The more activities is what we need actually, the increase of dapps in Steem Blockchain is kind of attracting specific users of those choices resulting users staying on those platform and not getting out and waching other dapps I really wonder what is going to happen when SMT's hit the floor.
While getting more active users should always be great!

Dapps are a tool so it's up to any individual how to use them but from what i see some people use them to insta upload/make posts just to post something, like how many steps they did today etc etc.
