I'm not quite sure. The mutation that leads to this strain of mice inhibits the development of the Thymus which is responsible for T cell production. Maybe the thymus is also necessary for hair growth?
It's also possible that the mutation affects a basic developmental pathway influcencing multiple aspects of development and the two most noticeable phenotypes are hair loss and immunosupression.
