Similar weight loss but better clinical improvement w/ LCHP vs. HC
Effects of an energy-restricted low-carbohydrate, high unsaturated fat/low saturated fat diet versus a high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet in type 2 diabetes: a 2 year randomized clinical trial (Tay et al., 2018)
TWO YEARS!
Relevant details about the intervention: TWO YEARS!
Both groups went for a 500-1000 kcal deficit. One group cut carbs from 53% to 14% (<50g/d to start) and replaced about 75% of the calories with fat & the rest with protein. This is good. In order to maintain/support lean mass during a weight loss diet, protein needs to go up, especially on low carb. Resistance exercise helps, too. This study had both!
By design, both groups lost the same amount of weight. I trust the exercise intervention was pretty high intensity due to the amount of musculoskeletal injuries. LOL.
Note to trainers: don't go from 0-60 with a bunch of 58-year old obese diabetics. Exercise = good. Injuries = bad.
