Breathing is a vital bodily process that occurs "like magic" and unconsciously.

Do we actually understand how to breathe?

In fact, a lot of us are unaware of the influence conscious breathing has on our well-being, energy, and happiness.

So how about acquiring proper breathing techniques?

I invite you to learn about your breathing in this article and the numerous advantages of respiratory relaxation for a better quality of life.

This essay was written as a component of my 32-article challenge, which was motivated by best-selling author Louise Hay's belief that we can all positively transform our lives.

The physiological process of breathing controls how much oxygen is delivered to our bodies and how much carbon dioxide is expelled.

Our lungs, diaphragm, and intercostal muscles are just a few of the body parts that are involved completely unconsciously with each cycle of inspiration and expiration.

A smooth and effective breathing process is ensured in large part by the diaphragm.

Just below the lungs, there is a broad, thin, dome-shaped muscle that divides the chest from the abdomen.

During inspiration, it lowers and contracts, expanding the chest cavity and creating more room for the lungs while also allowing air to enter the body.

Additionally, the diaphragm relaxes and rises during exhalation, which aids in ejecting air from the lungs.

Stress, a significant element in our contemporary societies, however, disturbs this well-oiled natural process.

We experience increasing amounts of stress and anxiety each day due to our modern, frenetic rhythms and consumption patterns.

But stress has a significant impact on our bodies, leading to shallower and faster breathing in the chest and occasionally even a sensation of being out of breath.

Stressful situations cause your sympathetic nervous system to become active, which is responsible for getting your body ready to react quickly in case you need to run away or fight.

Therefore, your sympathetic nervous system quickens your heart rate, widens the blood vessels to your muscles, quickens your breathing, and releases stress hormones like adrenaline to mobilise your vigilance and your capacity to react to the stimulation or the identified danger.

This mechanism thus causes an imbalance in our breathing and, if used repeatedly or over an extended period of time, can be detrimental to our general health.

Therefore, it is crucial to develop the ability to unwind and live a more tranquil life through conscious breathing.

A wellness technique called respiratory relaxation aims to put the body and mind into a deep state of relaxation.

It entails paying close attention to our breathing and attempting to deliberately alter its rhythm, depth, and quality.

We can bring our body back to the present moment and calm our minds and emotions by purposefully slowing down and controlling our breathing.

Everyone can practise respiratory relaxation on their own and is able to use it as a method of reducing daily stress.

Additionally, it can be combined with other forms of relaxation like yoga, meditation, or sophrology.

No special tools are needed to practise breathing relaxation, which can be done whenever and wherever.
