The importance of humor in modern life

Recently, I had a conversation with a close friend who was feeling overwhelmed. She shared her frustration about being stuck in a tough situation. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't figure out a solution. Instead of making progress, the problem seemed to grow larger in her mind, weighing her down even more.

Many of us can relate to this experience. We all face challenges in our lives. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, it feels like we are going in circles. We think endlessly about possible solutions, but nothing seems to work. The harder we push, the more trapped we feel.

I have experienced similar moments throughout my life, especially while being self-employed. There were times when things didn't go as planned. I would feel disappointed about not getting the clients I desired.

Humor plays a significant role in easing tension and disarming fearful situations. It acts as a tool that helps people cope with challenges. American psychiatrist George Vaillant studied how individuals develop their defense mechanisms over their lives.

He found that these mechanisms help people adapt to their surroundings and protect themselves from feelings of anxiety and pain. As a person ages, their use of these mechanisms tends to become more mature and flexible, making them more effective.

The shift from simple, primitive defense mechanisms to more refined ones aligns with the individual’s psychological growth. As people experience life's ups and downs, they learn to handle disappointment, frustration, and tension more effectively. This growth often comes with age and experience.

In learning to manage these emotions, individuals realize the importance of stepping beyond strict ideas of justice and the constant need to be right. By letting go of these rigid thoughts, they can embrace a broader perspective.

This shift in mindset can lead to a sense of freedom, allowing individuals to release ingrained behaviors that may have limited their growth. It is an empowering experience, enabling them to navigate the complexities of life with greater ease.
