As a health coach, reiki master, and yoga instructor, I add, “Reiki is an alternative therapy that balances the mind, body, and spirit, also called energy healing
Reiki is an energy-healing supplementary therapy from ancient Japan. Reiki is a combination of two Japanese words: Rei, meaning “wisdom from a higher power,” and Ki, meaning “life force energy.” Essentially, Reiki is spiritually guided life force energy.
It holds that all living things share a universal life force energy. Low energy affects mental and physical health. Stress and illness grow.
Just like a kinked hose prevents water from flowing smoothly, Reiki helps energy circulate naturally, allowing the body to function at its optimum.
Reiki is a natural, safe, and easy spiritual healing and personal growth tool for anyone. Many illnesses and ailments have improved with its use. It reduces adverse effects and promotes healing with any medical or therapeutic method.
The Journal of Evidence-Based Integrative Medicine found that reiki is “more effective than placebo” and “has broad potential as a complementary health therapy.”
Reiki affects the autonomic nervous system differently than placebo, suggesting it benefits it.
Reiki healing is safe and effective, and 15% of US hospitals offer it and growing. Reiki is offered as an addition to medical treatments at Yale, Harvard, Minnesota, Arizona, and UCLA.
Reiki is usually done in the client's aura. The patient need only close their eyes and surrender to the healing. Normal for some to fall asleep throughout the session.
Energy flows as the practitioner delicately touches the body. Energy flows through the practitioner's hands, causing warmth and tingling. Each hand posture is held until energy flow stops.
Most practitioners choose a quiet space for sessions. Low lighting is typical. Salt and candle lamps are widespread. Some healers recommend silent Reiki. No music or talking here.
Some like calming music too.

Table sessions last 60–90 minutes, whereas chair sessions last 20–30 minutes or less often 40 minutes.
Most Reiki treatments are mild. The only sensations may be tingling, tension relaxation, or minor circulation. The temperature of your body or surroundings may alter. Sometimes healing is powerful and becomes obvious after hours or days.
Many people may see colours and sense energy with their eyes closed. First, they may not realise it's energy.
Not all Reiki practitioners are trained similarly. They may have Level I, II, or III/Master training.
Anyone with Reiki training can give you hands-on Reiki. Distance healing requires a second-degree practitioner. You need a Reiki Master to learn Reiki.
