Natural and lazy science-based ways to find your bliss
Before discussing the topic further, it is important to clarify my stance. I am not opposed to using "unnatural" methods to seek happiness or bliss in life. Similarly, I do not advocate for a complete elimination of all pleasures.
Like many people, I understand how certain delightful sweets, such as the vanilla meringue cake at Cipriani’s, can bring about an immediate sense of joy. However, indulging too frequently can lead to various negative consequences, including weight gain and, in extreme cases, feelings of guilt, anxiety, and health issues such as diabetes or even death.
I am also aware of how enjoying a martini can initially feel wonderful but may quickly spiral into regret due to their intoxicating effects. My intention here is not to criticize enjoyment but to emphasize that genuine bliss is always within reach, even if it might be invisible at times.
Natural bliss and joy are attainable, and many wise individuals have recognized this fact long before my time. It is often stated that our true nature is fundamentally linked to a state of bliss, and that there exists an optimal way of being that is demonstrated by remarkable individuals.
There are even established measures to assess this happiness. You possess natural chemicals in your brain that interact with the same receptors as cannabis, which promotes happiness.
The function of your brain allows positive thoughts alone to activate receptors that release natural opioids. The potential for joy is inherently part of our neural architecture.
While it is essential to acknowledge that some days can be particularly tough, that loss can be harsh, and that people can challenge our resilience, these challenges do not define our true nature. The aim of this discussion is to inspire you to activate your authentic self that embodies bliss.
To help tap into this natural bliss and joy, consider these five pathways:
Use self-talk: Engaging in positive self-talk holds significant power. By reminding ourselves to live according to our core values, we create a more positive mental environment.
If, like many, you find yourself unclear about which values truly matter, start by evaluating a basic list: money, creativity, independence, relationships, faith, humor, and spontaneity.
Give each value a rating from one to ten, with ten representing its importance to you. Then, identify one specific action you can take to honor that value. This practice of self-acknowledgment often brings lasting joy.
Humor yourself: It may seem obvious that laughter is natural to humans, yet many forget how beneficial it can be. A recent experience watching "Curb Your Enthusiasm" on a flight reminded me of just how powerful laughter is.
Studies show laughter offers measurable health benefits, and one theory even suggests the brain cannot discern between forced laughter and genuine laughter.
Change your exposome: The term "exposome" may not be familiar, but it relates to the myriad chemical, biological, and physical exposures encountered in life.
Your surroundings are closely linked to your sense of self, so if inner bliss feels distant, consider exploring your external environment. A recent car ride along the stunning Malibu coast highlighted the beauty and vastness of nature, instantly lifting my spirits.
Access to the coast requires planning, but it’s worth it. Other options include the mountains or any place that inspires awe. Such experiences can shift your mental state, reduce self-focus, foster social connections, and deepen your sense of meaning in life.
