About Me: Aspergian Philomathy

At the time of writing this introduceyourself blog post, I have been a member of the SteemIt community for less than 1 week. I am still learning how to use SteemIt, so please forgive me if I get something wrong here.

My username here is TrisquelWhare, but you are welcome to refer to me as just TW if that helps. That alone raises all sorts of questions, doesn't it? Why do I call myself TrisquelWhare? What does TrisquelWhare mean? Why don't I just use my real name? As you get to know me, these conundrums and more will (hopefully) start to make sense.

Why do I use a pseudonym?

Over the years I have adopted many different pseudonyms. Sometimes I'll even go by more than one name simultaneously, to represent specific aspects of my personality or my interests, in different places on the Internet. There is often an assumption by the establishment and the gatekeepers of online communities that I am doing this for misanthropic reasons, such as sockpuppetry. I have even been chastised and censured for this behaviour in the past.

My use of pseudonyms is not intended to get around the rules, to purposefully disobey, or for any such Machiavellian plot. It is, instead, my way of representing the multifaceted nature of my personality and my interests. I have Asperger Syndrome, but unlike many Aspies, I am a philomath rather than having the common Aspie trait of being hyper-focused. The way that I have taught myself to handle my inherent philomathy is to subsume a multiple personality disorder. I have never been formally diagnosed with MPD, (as I have been with Aspergers), but it almost becomes something I aspire to!

To put all of this into simple terms, I am on the Autism Spectrum, but rather than having a very narrow range of specialization (as is common amongst those of us with ASD), my interests are broad, and as a result can be rather shallow. Instead of knowing a whole lot about a few narrowly defined subjects, I tend to know a little bit about a wide range of subjects. This can be just as frustrating to those around me (and to myself) as the more common Aspie trait. What it has meant for myself personally is that my focus tends to jump regularly from one thing to the next.

What does TrisquelWhare mean?

As you can probably tell from the CamelCase, there are two words in my username. Trisquel is the computer operating system which I am currently running. Whare is the Māori word for house or home. Together it means that my home runs on Trisquel GNU/Linux. Again, this username reveals disparate aspects of my personality: I am a computer geek, and I am a proud New Zealander. Neither has anything to do with the other.

If you decide to follow my account here on SteemIt, you will be exposed to a wide variety of information, as my focus shifts. You will no doubt find lots in here about computers, but specifically this can range from gaming, to software development, to theoretical debate about free software principles, etc. My core beliefs tend to guide my interests, and one such core belief is in fairness and equality, hence the article I have already posted in my blog about the extortionist monopoly of The Trusts in West Auckland. Follow the #WALTAG and #LetWestAucklandChoose tags for more on that subject. I will write about some of my favourite free software, and will post links to #freeculture content which takes my fancy.

One final note here, is that I am a New Zealander, and I do tend to write in New Zealand English mainly, although I have been on the Internet for so long now that I am used to seeing American spelling more frequently, such that I often will get confused between the two. Please forgive me if I am not consistent with my own spelling because of this.

Hello trisquelwhare! Welcome to Steemit! Hope you'll like the community here. As a start, here are 5 tips that we believe will be helpful to you:

  1. Keep your passwords safe: Unlike conventional sites, Steemit has 4 types of passwords. Each offers varying degrees of access to your account, so know where and when to use each of them. Also, make sure to keep them all safe and secure.
  2. Get Steem rewards: When writing a post, you'll have the option to choose how to receive your reward: "Default 50%/50%" or "Power Up 100%". As of this moment, choosing Default 50%/50% is the better option. But this can change over time. Check our post to know more.
  3. Upvote wisely: When upvoting, wait at least 30 minutes after the post is published to maximize your curation reward. Also, make sure not to upvote too much too fast so as not to drain your voting power.
  4. Know your Steem, Steem Dollars and Steem Power: Steem and Steem Dollars are the 2 main currencies here. Convert and power up more Steem into Steem Power so you can have higher values on your upvotes.
  5. Have Fun and Enjoy!

nice to meet u!

Hi there @happychau123, thank you for the comment, and nice to meet you too. Any comments on my #introduceyourself post?

all is great:)!!

keep it this way:)

It was cool to learn about philomathy, I'd not heard of it before.

I was hoping the Trisquel part of your name was to do with something Celtic-y, lol, but at least I knew what whare meant. :D

It is great to have you here, fellow kiwi, and I'm sure you'll find many topics to post about once you jump down the rabbit hole!

Yes, I'm very much the oddity amongst my fellow Aspergian peers. A subset of a subset, so-to-speak. Several of my family members are also on the Autism Spectrum, to a greater or lesser degree.

My wife is more the Celtic side of things in our household, being of Irish extraction. I'm still learning about the TrisquelGNU distro, and have been running it here only since April 2018, when I was going to be upgrading to the latest Lubuntu, but I chose Trisquel instead.

Thanks for the kind welcome, @ravenruis. I am particularly enjoying getting to meet the various Kiwi's here on SteemIt. I hope to generate a bit of crypto from my efforts here, and maybe the local community can point me in the right direction for cashing out $SPD to $NZD fiat, and everything that this would entail, including exchanges, and compliance issues (taxation, WINZ rules relating to crypto, etc). I have lots to learn, and, fortunately, being a philomath, I love to learn! 😄

love to learn

lol, yep you've come to the right place!

On Saturdays I have/do publish profiles of kiwis here so if you haven't discovered them already you might like to go over old issues (listed under our @teamnz profile page). Some have been away for months, sadly, but we hope they'll try Steemit again.

As for the crypto info - well, we'd all like to know that lolol. Its not the easiest thing to do here in NZ, that's about the only thing I've learned, but there are others who are better informed so we hope to pool experiences and information for everyone to benefit from. :)

Big supporter of Free Software and Auckland based myself. You may enjoy reading some of my older posts ;) Let's meet up! Cheers, Nick

Thanks @cryptonik, I've been using #opensource for many years now, including Linux as my main desktop OS. I've only recently started learning more about #freesoftware and the #fourfreedoms, including GNU/Linux and the difference between "open" and "free".

I have been to #AuckLUG meetings in the past, and I was a volunteer during the #LCA2015 #LinuxConfAu which was held at Auckland Uni. I've also been a member of Tangleball, the makerspace in central Auckland. Chances are you might already know me from one of those places, but I tend to use different pseudonyms, so it is rather hard to tell, haha.

Hello, fellow aspie!
I wrote a post on aspergers, too. It's good to meet you.
I am used to British/aussie/nz speech, I've got friends everywhere.

Hi, I just left you a comment on your post about Aspergers. Thanks for sharing of your experience. As I said there, your comments about misunderstanding idioms brought a smile to my face, as I too have that common experience. Nice to meet you too.

Hi, I'm @rachiid .First I stopped by to give you a warm welcome to the Steemit platform.Next I wish you good luck and many good things as you join us. I upvote you, if you would like to follow me I will happily follow you too

Thank you for the warm welcome, @rachiid. Any comments about my #introduceyourself post? I'm really looking for critique, with both positive and negative feedback, so that I can improve my content here. Again, thanks for the welcome.

Hi @trisquelwhare. I am glad with your presence in Steemit. I wish you the best! Hope you gonna have fun with our community and see you soon!

Well, this sounds way better than all 'introduce yourself' posts that i have come across. I'm totally blown away. It's great to have you here. It's evident that I'll learn a lot. Thanks so much

Thanks for that @becca-p. I am slowly learning, but I have a slight advantage in that I have spent the last few months using Minds.com, which also is a social site on a blockchain. It is different, very different in many respects, but the basic principles are similar, so that is helping me to understand SteemIt, through comparison.

Oh. That's great

One of the greatest introduceyourself posts I have seen. that aside I am really intrigued by your definitions. i have never been diagnosed with anything but brain injury, but resonate with your choices as they are mine. I find the impairment as an opportunity to gain insight into the life of many. WHo said there were limits in life, not anyone I listen to. I use a pseudonym @rushofwaves cause thats what I am. Have a great day and I look forward to connecting with you in the future!! @trisquelwhare

Thanks for the reply, @rushofwaves. I should mention that I'm amongst those who consider ASD to be a "difference" rather than a "disability" as such. As I say above, I have some family members who are at the other end of the Spectrum to myself, and they do struggle and face hardship because of their difference. For myself though, I consider ASD to be the next evolutionary step for humankind, haha. Just look at the numbers of people with ASD who work in Silicon Valley, for instance!
