RE: CLASSIFICADOS! // LetsGoCoringation // TheWorldOfSports
Hey friend, what a great comment! It's actually not intuitive at all... The Brazilian and Latin American football calendar starts and ends along with the year, so there's already this discompass with the european calendar. However, the main thing is that there's a huge history of local State Championships throughout the twenty-four states of Brazil, doing to our country being so big. Because of it, the Estaduais were really important during the last century, and continue to be the main competitions in the start of each year for the Brazilian squads. I think the Brazilian league as it is nowadays, the Brasileirão, has been like this for around thirty something years, and it only starts in April/May.
Ah, so there's a local championship and then the Brasileirao which covers the whole country?
Does the local championship determine if you play in the Brasileirao?
Actually nowadays the local state championships determine if you play in the next year's national cup, the Copa do Brasil. The Brasileirão is structured in four tiers, called Séries, with promotions and relegations each edition. To get to the first one, called Brasileirão Série A you have to qualify to the Série D and go up from there.
And its really interesting how each local state championship has its uniqueness, and ours here in the state of São Paulo, the Paulistão, is the most competitive and better organized in our country. A lot of it is due to our Football Federation of the state, which is a lot better institution even then the national one, that is a really ridiculous one. If you can believe, the national calendar had less than TWO OFFICIAL WEEKS of resting time for the players all around the country, due to it being mismanaged and the local state federations having to fit into these terrible decisions. Corinthians this season has played, on average, a game every three days. It's completely bonkers, but at least we've been winning well, and with the luck on our side, huh :)

Oh wow, OK. I think I get it now. There are 2 separate leagues that are played each season - each independent from one another - one local - one national. It reads like the State Championship is like a pre-season tournament for the real deal.

Yeah, that's basically it! The Brasileirão has been getting better and better for the past few years, and it is one of the most competitive leagues in regards to a lot of different teams having real winning chances for the title each edition. In my opinion, it's probably the most thrilling league to watch in this aspect, along with the Premier League. I'll never forget that unique season that happened in 2016, when Leicester City shocked the world...
What about you, do you support any football club?

My fondest moment in a Premier League season was this, in 2012:
No other league can produce this kind of drama on the final day. Half the pub watching (and supporting) Man Utd. The other half City. Incredible.
I support Reading FC. I've written quite a lot about football in the past and I've archived most of them in this post. You might enjoy reading a few of them (you'll need to scroll down for the football).

Yeah, this end of the season was dramatically unforgettable. I'm fond of United because it was the first team I became an idol on the Player Career Mode playing on my first FIFA for the PS3, the FIFA11... Good old times. I'll read about Reading FC through your words for sure, thanks!
