Unraveling Anxiety through 5-Sense Check-Ins

in #health6 years ago (edited)

Anxiety can be a dangerous guest, and is more common than we may individually recognize. It can be a fleeting momentary experience, or fully debilitating. It decides its own schedule and behavior, disregarding our own goals and desires.

So what do we do when we feel as if we are powerless to do anything?

First, it’s important to take note of your close surroundings.

Are you in danger or unable to meet your basic needs?
Is there a clear cause of this anxiety or is it a buildup from many pressures?

Take a moment to notice your situation and see if there is any one thing that requires your immediate attention.

Ask yourself:

Do I actually need to do anything right now?
Am I causing undue stress by believing there is something I need to do?

Maybe you can’t really do anything to change your current situation.

So what can we do when we feel as if we can do nothing at all?

If you aren’t in danger, and you aren’t in dire need, just Be.
Practice the art of simple living.

Allow this moment to exist without needing to act upon it.
Breathe and recognize the miracle of existence. The ever-pumping flow of blood in your veins and electricity running through your body. Let the movement and sounds of the energy around you wash over you and past you.

Sieve your own energy from this flow and re-member yourself.

If you have a friend with you, ask them to be still with you for a moment and experience the encircling world through their own senses. Ask them what they notice. Perhaps their experience is entirely different from your own. These differences in perceptions of the same momentary experiences can be quite enlightening.

When you feel that tightening grip of anxiety, try to remember to center yourself.
Gather information from your senses and realign your somatic experience with your moment.

Awaken your senses to the present.
Release anxiety through conscious breathing.
Let the stress of feeling undone simply unravel.

Till next time,
Be sweet, stay wild

Anxiety is a horrible feeling and something I feel often. I love how beautiful you make your solution sound, it's almost like you're helping me to see it as something not to be afraid of, so thank you for that.

Anxiety really can classify as a silent killer. Happy you have found a bit of demystification of the 'shadow' of anxiety through this.

I recently heard as well, for anyone interested, that magnesium deficiency is rampant in humans these days and is a leading cause of anxiety and general uneasiness. Magnesium helps our entire nervous system rest, so it might be good to look into for anyone feeling extra anxious or unwell 🐾

Thank you very much for the kind words and advice. Magnesium is amazing and I have started supplementing with it.

That is a very profound thought, we easily get distracted by future or past scenerios which could worsen our anxieties. thanks for sharing the awesome tips.

Often I notice that my anxiety stems from the 'story' of some event, where if I focus truly on the end result, the action or the present, my fears melt away because ego is no longer attached to the outcome.

I deal with anxiety, too, especially since my husband passed, so this is good and welcome advice. THANK YOU! I shall try it next time the need arises, and very much appreciate your sharing this in #steemitbloggers 💙

I wrote this up after an awful day of anxiety. Writing through these simple check-ins was helpful in soothing my nerves.

May you be at ease through the day, @thekittygirl

Thank you for this! I've been having a high-anxiety week, for varied reasons. Have to keep talking myself down, taking deep breaths, and remembering that the panic is unnecessary. Just be. Yes. ((hugs))
