Vitamin D synthesis takes some major TEAMWORK
The sun hits your skin and converts 7-dehydrocholesterol into pre-vitamin D3. Liver converts pre-D3 into 25-hydroxy-vitamin D3. Kidneys convert that into 1,25-dihydroxy D3.
The last step is tightly regulated so 1,25-dihydroxy D3 levels don't budge until you get severely deficient, so they usually measure 25-hydroxy D3 instead. This reflects total diet and endogenous vitamin D.
That's all for now!

I like your post about vitamin D.
What do you think of the Vitamin D reserves made by the organism on summer for the winter of the body?
In many regions this can work: vitamin D is stored in many tissues including adipose tissue. However, there have been debates suggesting we may not need as much vitamin D in winter. The types of challenges to our immune system are different in summer and winter, and the part of our immune system that vitamin D supports is against the types we're exposed to in summer. In summer, we're more likely to be traveling around and exposed to "novel" infections.
Cool! I love seeing bio-mechanisms here!
Thanks!
