Remember This Guy?

not the one with the beard..that's me...the other one
..............................................................................................................................................................................

His name was William F. Buckley. The anti-conservative website, WikiPedia has an article about him in which it says in part:

  • William Frank Buckley Jr. (born William Francis Buckley;[1] November 24, 1925 – February 27, 2008) was an American conservative author[2] and commentator. He founded National Review magazine in 1955, which had a major impact in stimulating the conservative movement; hosted 1,429 episodes of the television show Firing Line (1966–1999), where he became known for his transatlantic accent and wide vocabulary;[3] and wrote a nationally syndicated newspaper column

Back in the day I used to listen to him on Meet the Press or other sunday evening talkshows...for about thirty seconds...then I'd go do something more exciting...like sorting my sock drawer.

I've NEVER heard such a BAD public speaker.

But I digress. The point is NOT that people speak poorly in public...a great many people do. The point is WHY MAKE A VIDEO of them doing so? He was a MUCH better writer than he was a speaker. He could make his point much better in text than ...ah...um...uhhhhh...by speaking.

Which brings THIS post to mind..

DOES ANYONE REALLY WATCH VIDEOS ON STEEMIT?

Not me. I very, very rarely do so. Why waste my time listening to someone speak, however well done or poorly, when I can get the same information in one tenth the time by reading the transcript. (I rarely watch TedTalks either)

One reason I don't like to listen to speeches is that I was raised a fundamentalist christian. For my entire pre-adult life I was forced to endure sermons several times a week. I'm scarred...scarred I tell you from that horrible experience.

Another reason is that I have a Visual Memory if I can see something in print I'm MUCH more likely to remember it. If I hear it...not so much. (I'm HORRIBLE at remembering peoples names from verbal introductions).

A third reason is... why waste the potential of video? Video can show so much MORE than a person, however well or poor, speaking. If we MUST hear someone speak, it would be much better as a narrator explaining the video. Computer Generated animations come to mind.

A fourth reason...is that I'm paranoid.

Back in the day I took couple of degrees in business. I was forced to endure courses in MARKETING (spit). In those course they teach how to lie and deceive UNDETECTABLY. They teach techniques that bypasses your conscious observance and sneak into your SUB conscious unaware. I rilly, rilly don't like that idea.

SO...I very rarely watch videos...I stay the HELL away from TV...and the onliest movies that I watch are mindless forms of pure entertainment...( and I STILL keep my guard up)

Paranoid?
Yeah, undoubtedly.
But am I paranoid

ENOUGH?

Sort:

Paranoia, and self preservation, are good friends with each other.

I would go as as far as to say, paranoia has bad reputation - probably started by the left to get you to let your guard down

You have a good sense of humor!

And I also don't watch videos here on Steemit. I haven't watched TV in 3 years and I quit Facebook and Twitter a month ago.

It is all bullshit and rots your fucking brain.

If I am bored I go outside, walk or train in the park or the forest, visit my family, read a book, play the damn guitar, play video games for an hour or learn something about Steemit.

I am actually very rarely bored. People that are bored are simply boring because they have no goals and know nothing except about their 9-5 slave job.

The wiser people are and the more ambition they have, the less time or nerves they have for any bullshit.

It's been my observation that intelligent people rarely get bored.

Whats TV? ;-} I gave that up over 10 years ago. To damn many commercials and they were driving me crazy. I mean really who would buy an incontinence pill that helps you not pee, but the number one side effect is that it gives you dry mouth, and the only know cure for dry mouth is to drink something, and we all know what happens when you drink something, you need to pee, so then you take a pill, and don't need to pee, but then the dry mouth comes back, and face it eventually you are going to need to pee. so what the hell was the purpose of a pill to stop you from needing to pee that was going to make you thirsty, so you would need to pee.

Sorry for the rant, I hated that commercial, and so gave up TV.

It is much easier for me also to remember when I read, and I love to read, the pictures are generally much more clear than any video could make.

I liked this post. Always know who is standing behind you and then question why.

I gave up watching TV in 'about' 1969...when I got out of high school. Actually I didn't watch it very much before then. Like you said...silly nauseating commercials...and stupid shows..

I think one of the only quality shows I ever watched was Dark Shadows, and I was just a kid then, so do not remember much of it, just that it was about Vampires, probably why I enjoy those stories.

Paranoia... is a great trait at times.

Hahhaha Not the beard one that's me :D that's hilarious :D

Right there with you. I'm much better expressing myself through text, and I recall better things I've read than heard or watched.

Never made it on YouTube, as a result. But, I think this is the place for me. :)

I don't know if I would take as much of a hardline stance, sometimes body language and expression and tone can give you a fuller feel about the person and where they are coming from and whether or not they are full of shit. But yeah, they are time consuming and there is WAY too much self-important VLOGing going on now, it's tiring to see how everyone is so ready to sell themselves cause it is much easier to get lazy peoples attention with a video than with an article.

As for the ability to manipulate, mindless forms of entertainment are the worst for that :-P

I fully agree with this one! Watching a video when text is available - text you can skim, review at will, memorize, or skip - seems insane. I've had to endure so many YouTube tutorials where people mumble and talk about their cats for five minutes before rushing past the one thing I'm eager to learn. Just write the steps down, please!

Video has great potential to be an engaging medium, but that's not what most folks are using it for.

Some exceptions: demonstrating how an engine works, how to change the oil in a lawn mower, hands-on repair of a washing machine - YES - please take me through it in a video (just don't block the camera with your own ass).

But for computer how-to, opinions, and news? Text every time!
