Background download for map segments.

Brouter is an Android app that serves as a routing and navigation service for cyclists.
The app allows for downloading map segments for use with mapping apps like OsmAnd.

Proposal
My proposal to the app is regarding the downloading of map segments. The app should be able to download in background, and not only when the app page is kept active. This could be shown on the notification bar with download progress.

If the app download manager is given background functionality, it would be able to keep running after app is minimized and would have a progress on the notification bar like this.
Benefits
In cases of downloading files, the background functionality would allow for ease of download while doing other things on the device. Users would be able to minimize the app without having to lose the currently downloading file especially when it's not a small sized file.
