What Awareness Means to "Me": My Answer To The TribeSteemUp Bi-Weekly Question

in #tribesteemup6 years ago (edited)

Many would describe awareness as something they have, something they own; "my awareness". I can totally understand where that comes from as it seems to be the obvious thing to believe. Let's look a little bit further.

Who owns what?

When we say "my awareness", who is actually saying that? If we stick to the facts, "my awareness" is a thought; it is simply a set of letters that become words. They point to something but are not it. So, can thoughts have an awareness?

On behalf of an imaginary person

For most us here on earth, we act and speak on behalf of an imaginary character. "Who am I?" is a simple question that can reveal what is. Often times, we'll answer by giving our name, by referring to the past, things we do, things we like and so on. But these referrals are always made of thoughts, images, words, letters. Can we say that those are "me"? Are they "it"?

What the fuck are we then?

Thoughts, images, sensations, all come and go, they change, they dissolve, but being aware, or simply being, is always there. That is a fact we can all acknowledge, yes? Thus, awareness holds everything and everything is made of awareness. If we truly see what reality is made of, in our own experience, not secondhand knowledge, then the obvious is revealed. Curiosity can be a fun way to explore the nature of reality. If we take a moment to investigate, to be an awareness detective, and advance our inquiry through negation, then what we are will eventually reveal itself.

What is always there (or here)

We've been conditioned to get our answers from outer sources. Knowledge is a useful tool. However, if we are really about discovering the truth of reality, we have to do it on our own. Others can help by pointing towards it. And it might be closer than we think... What can we say has always, is, an always will be? This moment, right? Remember, thoughts of the past and future always exist in this moment. We are kind of stuck with what is, now. Always.

So, what is this moment made of?
