Tragedy Strikes
Every other Wednesday, our friends Bill & Christina make the trek down to our area to grab some beers with whomever can make it from “the group”. Well, this Wednesday’s meet was cancelled due to a truly unfortunate situation. Before I start, I’ll just preface this by saying they are fine and safe.
Bill had come home to find that their house was on fire. Him and Christina got out safe and the kids were not home at the time so all are safe. But their pad is half destroyed. The boys bedrooms are toast along with a good portion of the basement and bathroom.
They will be displaced for around 9 months as contractors basically gut it and rebuild. They will be renting a condo for the time being and luckily it’s super close to their old pad so it won’t disrupt their routines too terribly.
The damage was immense though. Even the rooms where no flames came close to touching weee covered in soot. It’s an absolute shame and they are understandable banged up about it. They actually spent Thursday evening at our house as I think they just needed to get their minds off of it for a bit.
They will rebuild and pick up the pieces. They will overcome this tragedy but man...it’s pretty unbelievable. I told them that when they get back in, that we want to donate a ton of cool collectibles for the boys new rooms as pretty much all of their possessions were demolished. We will do our part to help make it better than ever.
I believe we will be helping them soon in moving out whatever they want to salvage as the rest will be left for the contractors and cleaning crew to take care of.
What a crazy scenario...
Harsh :( Any idea of the cause?
Yeah totally blows. Still unclear at the moment. He had a couple hundred pics he showed me...fucking brutal to see.
Wow that is crazy. So glad nobody was hurt but what a devastating thing to happen. I couldn't even imagine.

Me neither. Sad part is my buddy Bill lost most of his possessions in the flood from Sandy. Now this...

Hey, @blewitt.
I'm sorry to see this. It's terrible for sure. I'm glad you led with the fact that they were all safe and unharmed. When that's the case, some good can come out of it.
I was going to ask the cause, but you've already said they're still investigating. What about expenses? Is it too soon to know if the tear out and rebuild will all be covered by insurance? (I guess I'm assuming they have something like that.)
They are fortunate to have you and your family as friends, to help move them, to be there for them, even when it's just to get their minds off it all. It's a devastating loss, major inconvenience, but having you and others to be there will help get them through it.
Hopefully, the nine months will be short, and all will be well in the meantime.
Thx for the kind words brother.
Exactly. Ultimately it’s stuff that can be replaced and they will rebuild. Luckily Bill had renters insurance as the house is in her name so they get a bit from that. Not e ouch to replace possessions lost but at least something. The house itself will be covered through insurance up to a certain amount. The cool part is they get to kinda rebuild it completely as long as they stay in that budget. So they might go cheaper on flooring but add a second bathroom. Things like that.

That is terrible! I never had thought about this in the past as I lived so many year in a concrete structure with little risk of a fire spreading but these days as I moved back to the US, it is scary as we often forget key prevention measures. In fact, as I say this I need to check the dates on my extinguishers which are about 3 years old now!

My buddy said when he saw the fire it looked minor and he ran to get the extinguisher. Said he couldn’t have been gone longer than 30 seconds. When he returned the entire kids bedroom was engulfed and beyond what he could handle. Crazy...

Wow that’s so awful. Yeah, luckily things are moving fairly quickly for them as far as insurance $$$ goes but they will be displaced for 9-12 months. Most of their stuff is trashed. Even the items not affected by fire have a smell of fresh tasty jerky to them. So sad but once again, at least nobody was hurt and ultimately...it’s just stuff.

Wow that fire really wrecked the place @blewitt, they have lost so much but atleast nobody got hurt, any reason on how this fire got started?
Im not sure yet but they know the area it started at. I could t even imagine. They are handling it a lot better that I would be in all honesty
