Passive radiative cooling materials and metamaterials are poised to become one of the most critical technologies in the next few decades. These materials absorb heat from contact with objects and the environment, converting it into frequencies of electromagnetic radiation that penetrate the atmosphere and radiate out into the cold of interstellar space. This process enables cooling without any power input and even holds the potential to generate energy.

These materials can augment air conditioning systems, create outdoor cooling areas, enhance solar panel efficiency, and aid in the cooling of data centers, power plants, factories, and chemical processing plants. Currently, the efficiency of these materials is relatively low, achieving temperature drops of around 10°C from the ambient environment. However, significant progress is anticipated as our understanding of the theory improves and new materials are developed. It is conceivable that future advancements could lead to dramatically deeper temperature drops, potentially making even extreme environments like Arizona more habitable.
