Trapping Squirrel Using Grass

You must be thinking that the title of this post is nonsense.

Let me explain. During my trip to Tamparuli Living Art Center (TALAC) . I met @borneoairbrush friend that was toying around with a bamboo.

He was so busy concentrating on doing something with the bamboo, but I just left him alone and continue having my discussion with @borneoairbrush on an initiative art related that he is passionate about. I will will more about the new initiative in future post.

While having our conversation, I can't help but to look at his friend everynow and then, curious at what the hell is he up too.

I went to him and ask him, what are you doing. He explain that he is making a sunggul . Then I just watch him working his craft.

He also told me that @borneoairbrush is having issue with abundance of squirrel on his area, the land area is fill with fruit tree and one particular fruit that he loves the most is mangosteen, this season their family didn't had the chance to eat the mangosteen as the squirrel gets them before they do.

So here comes sunggul. It's a trapping device made out bamboo.

In Sabah, this is a typical device use to trap squirrel especially since bamboo can be found everywhere and it's a free material.

Bamboo the grass

Bamboo is are plants that is segmented, hollow in segment , has a woody stems that grows from underground rhizomes.

Bamboos grows at intervals of up to 10 - q15 years, after which the plant usually die. In some cases It is really suitable for land erosion too.

It is found at tropics and subtropical regions of Asia, Africa and South America. According to some studies there is 91 genera and more than 1000 species of bamboos known in the world,
In the sabah states, the Forestry Research Centre in Sepilok has recorded a total of 36 species found Throughout the state.

While there is one species that is thought to be imported but there is lacking in documentation to determine these. Tambunan is known to have a huge amount of bamboo, this is because in the past it is recorded that bamboo was urged to be planted by the the district officer.

Being the heartland of the local native, lots of innovation in bamboo uses is found in Tambunan. Not to forget. Bamboo is a species of grass, hence the title.

Squirrel Dinner

Check out the video on @borneoairbrush friends explaining on how the trap work and toward the end , I ask what do you do with the squirrel, he said. He cook with mix with black soya sauce . Hehe.

The same night he put on the trap, now I am just waiting for the dinner invitation.
