I doubt Electric car will replace Diesel cars. Diesel engine can create more torque so it can tow heavy loads which electric cars can't.
Diesel vehicle can also go further distance than any electric car.
If you want less pollution then run Diesel vehicles with Biodiesel which is recycled from used vegetable oils. You can also make biodiesel in so many ways it is almost unlimited resource.
So NO electric cars will NOT replace Diesel cars.
Hum @greenbeans, I love your perspective, but you see the level at which technology is evolving, you can never predict what can happen. Years back, malerial was a plaque just like HIV/ AIDS but over time things change. So let's keep our fingers crossed and see what happens in decades to come. Meanwhile, we don't even need to sit down and look. Let's all go to the drawing board and see how we can make things happen. I think @ikchris just made several points here,worthy of some accolades.
I always think the future will be an exciting one. I am always open to the possibility that a new tech may surpass an existing one.
@greenbeans the torque created by electric cars have been greatly improved unlike like in the early 20th century and with advancement in technology, time might come when there would be no torque difference between diesel car and electric car
The torque issue is one that makes diesel look as if it can't be replaced by electric vehicles. The diesel, for now, has more torque at low rpm, this may be a good thing depending on the situation. Imagine more torque on a light vehicle on a slippery road! But the torque war may soon be won by the electric vehicle via clever use of the gear system and other optimisation. I'm a fan of electric vehicles as you must have guessed :) I believe they stand to get better with time.
The problem with doing this on electric cars is that once you increase torque you also increase power consumption. When power consumption goes up on electric cars you reduce the travelling distant.
Diesel is here to stay and the best way to make it eco-friendly is to run it on Biodiesel.
