This Photo Of The Left Half Of CMS From The Steemstem Meetup Is Still Making Me Smile!

I am in limbo at the Istanbul airport on a 9 hour overnight layover.

To remain sane, I'm going through my photos from the @Steemstem meetup and this one obviously stood out. TONS more to say about the meetup soon. Spoiler: It was legit awesome.

I can host you in Istanbul :)

That's very kind of you to offer! But i would need to get an e visa, make it through customs and then find my way to you - only to head back almost immediately by that point to the airport to get through security for the 8:00 flight - but if/when I return for an actual trip we can be in touch :)

oh got it.. Let me know if you come again to Turkey ;)

Great photo, but what exactly is CMS? It doesn't seem to ring a bell

There's gonna be a ton of posts in the next few days about the meetup - and therefore about CMS as well - but it's basically a giant, multi layered, custom designed and built sensor capable of detecting some of the elementary particles resulting from the collision of two protons at super fast speeds.

Then computers, and eventually people, analyze what CMS detected and try to reconstruct the results of the collision backward in the hopes of finding new undiscovered particles - for instance, the Higgs Boson back in 2012

Others may come shoot me down for both providing a massively oversimplified, and therefore confusing conceptual example, as well as one from a "field" of forensic "science" that is total bullshit - but it's like the physics equivalent of blood splatter analysis or crime scene reproduction - except infinitely more complex and with an extraordinarily accurate end result.

I am so jealous, and excited you for guys:)

I was excited to begin with - but didn't even realize how excited until we got to CMS and then I literally couldn't stop smiling and asking questions.

I wish I could have gone. I'm sure it was a blast.

There will certainly be others I think! (Hope :))

That´s some amazing machinery. Always astonished by the amount of work and precision that flows into such huge projects...

Two of several aspects of the LHC that just blew my mind

that's awesome. did they reveal any plans to open a Stargate to another dimension or anything?? 😄

It's hard not to start daydreaming around such science fictiony looking tech about the various scifi/bitcoin mining super applications it could be put to. But I've been assured no such plans are in the works

Wow! Some tech no? Jajajaja
