Having just shared the earliest traumatic experience of my life that I can recall - that life-defining moment that taught me about abandonment, I would appreciate you joining me on journey of self-discovery and the lessons that I have learnt that have brought me to this place in my life. As I do so you are encouraged to search your soul as you reflect on your life experiences and the lessons that have influenced your thoughts and the way you behave and react to what life throws at you.

I have entitled this article Addictive Personality Disorder because all behaviour has the potential to become an addiction. Many of our weaknesses and failures are as a result of an addiction. In fact every human being has an addictive personality and the potential exists in all of us to mess things up because of counter-productive habitual behaviour.

A habit is merely a behaviour that has become long-term and is embedded in our unconscious mind. In other words we are doing things that we are totally unaware of. Have you ever been told you are doing or saying something and reject or disagree with the person who is telling you? Of course you have, we all have.

I define addiction as the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming, to such an extent that its cessation potentially disrupts life and relationships even causing severe trauma.

When most people hear the word addiction, they think of dependence on a substance, such as drugs or alcohol. And yes that remains a global dilemma. However when we desire a "high" that becomes so strong that the so-called addict loses control and seeks the activity despite all negative consequences.

Here are some of the more common addictive behaviours not in any order of priority.
