My general concerns about steemit, not a rant just a observation!

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

Hello all and thanks for stopping by. I would like to address a concern I have with regards to steemit and adoption.

Over the last few weeks I have been active on steemit every single day. Personally being involved with crypto over the lasdt 3 years I see steemits ability to change lives. However we have a problem!

Steemit appears to work only for those who have been involved in cryto in the past. I am guessing mostly all the whales on steemit have been as well and are probably only voting for users, steemit or crypto related information.

For example I helped my father @lespenny join steemit and he put his heart and soul into writing what we both though is an amazing post. The problem is the post got berried with only a couple comments. My father is not in it for the money he genuinely wants to write content and share his story. I am sorry to say he has now turned to facebook as he reposed his steemit article on fb and got a great response! Unfortunately he now tells me steemit is a waste of time.

My wife @nailsbykara01 has posted almost every single day up until a few days ago about what she does for a living, although she was hoping to earn some extra cash she was truly excited to share and has now also given up because she feels she is wasting here time.

My father and wife both has only created genuine original content and they have both given up due to lack of response to there posts.

My question is why does this happen to everyday people? Is it because they can't relate to the crypto steemit crowd? I have personally made a effort and introduce almost 20 family and friends and they have all given up after a post or two despite my best efforts to help. I get the same response, it doesn't work people don't read or comment on there posts.

Personally I see the potential and can earn a little cash around here doing related tutorials and stuff but what about the masses? I think we might have a problem people!

Thanks for reading I am looking forward to your comments!

I am in my first couple of hours, and still figuring this out. I used to write for a site called Newsvine, which paid in US dollars, by click. It did take time to build followers, and even on FB to get a reaction you need friends who care about your topics. Just a few thoughts from a Newbie

@whatsup Thank you and welcome! As for figuring things out I have attached a tutorial that will help you get started. I value your comment please return in a couple days and give us feedback much appreciated!

Thank you very much for the tutorial! Even in the hours since this morning more of this is making sense.

I posted an article for a friend of mine. You can find it in my history somewhere. Absolutely zero response. He was pretty insulted, actually.

Steemit whales will upvote people that appear popular , successful or somewhat famous in crypto. Purely to achieve better adoption. It's sad, but that's how it works.

That's just not how it works

I would say it is just something you have to enjoy for your own reasons and enjoyment. I would never suggest getting on Steemit to make money, but that is something that could happen over time if you fall into a niche you love whether it be posting, commenting, or just following and up voting.

I think the people who have made big amounts of money a few initil posts (I haven't made a penny) are not really making on those initial posts. They are getting paid for years of work and building a reputation and following in the past on other social networks. They kind of bring their own following with them. This is not to say that an unknown can't generate a lot of influence and interest quickly, but I think that would be rare. Lots of people with great talent never really get recognized, but if they love what they do they will likely keep doing it.

You guess wrong. The whales are seeking original and also non-steemit related content. The make up tutorial that made 10s of thousands is just one example of how whales celebrate diversification within steemit.

My dad is also sharing his story on steemit. Check his blog @letsgetlost and you'll see that he was posting for quite a while before he started making any money.

You'll also see on my own blog that I had beginners luck with my first post, but made pennies for a long time after.

Your post is just a lottery ticket.

The trick is to not get discouraged. While the content and quality is important, it is mostly luck that gets the money. Focus more on consistency which will help build followers for the blog.

I will follow both your father and your wife so I hope they will be back. But if they don't enjoy writing or posting what they are passionate about then it's ok if they don't want to contribute.

Yes, as I joined Steemit, bringing a few others along, which have since left disappointed, I believed this to be a great platform and concept. As I upvote THIS content, I must apologize for my vote is worthless. The whales, about 50 in number hold all the weight in voting that accrues actual value. A great writer is not likely to ever be noticed or rewarded. A named personality joining, they notice and reward them, for they will encourage others to come. Stats show 68,000 users of which 2200 are actually active. There seems to be a revolving door here. Question is how do you get a whale to notice you? Or do whales only notice other whales?

I think it's so premature to ask friends and family to try Steemit. They are used to their friends and family on Facebook, where it's enough to "like" the snapshot of the little nephew playing with the family dog. They probably didn't even get on Facebook until it had been around for a long time. Maybe they are involved in a Facebook group or two, maybe not. But they aren't writing any real content for those groups or their family, just posting snippets and photo albums -- sometimes 57 pictures in the photo album, just because that's how many pictures they took while they were on vacation. They want to share memes and cute videos that their friends have shared.

So who should you recruit? Anyone who has a message that they want to get out. Anyone who wants to cultivate a larger community around a specific subject or set of values. Anyone who is thinking about having their own blog for any reason. Anyone who has a blog or YouTube channel, who wants to expand their audience or repurpose their content. Anyone who is on Tumblr, who will be looking for a new home when the sale to Verizon goes through and support for that platform becomes a business liability. I would suggest kids (over 13) because they have so much time and aren't scared by new things, but with the blockchain, everything is there forever, so maybe that's setting them up for trouble ahead.

I would say that's my 2 cents, but I don't think I have that yet! haha
