TOP SECRET! - STEEMIT 2017 ROADMAP - Steemit Communities
I’m thinking the Steemit 2017 Roadmap doc must be TOP SECRET, because I almost never see it referenced and discussed on Steemit...
Why not?
My favorite part: Communities, and Moderation.
Target: Q3
So that would be Oct 1, right?

Feature: Moderation and Community Namespaces
We believe that high-quality content and communities of content producers and their audiences are the primary driver of growth of the steemit.com site, and in turn the wider adoption of the platform and STEEM. To this end, we wish to enable many users to build communities in parallel around curating specific types of content valuable to their audiences.
To enable this, we intend to augment our current tag-based organizational structure for posts with a new system called “communities”, a special group into which others can post articles. Two types of communities will exist: communities into which anyone in the world can post (where community founders (or their delegated moderators) can decide, post-hoc, which posts to hide from view) or communities in which only community founders’ (or their delegated authors’) posts will appear.
This system of moderation will function identically to the aforementioned comment moderation system, with all content (including hidden or moderated content) published permanently in the blockchain to prevent censorship. The steemit.com web site will respect the display preferences of the specific community maintainers (within their own community namespace only) while simultaneously propagating every participant’s voice throughout the blockchain to the entire world (regardless of moderator opinions).
We believe this unique approach finally solves one of the largest problems currently presented to social media services: the dichotomy between maintaining a high Signal-toNoise Ratio (SNR) for a quality content experience free of spam and low-value comments, whilst simultaneously preventing any type of censorship.
It is our hope and design goal for our services (all of which are published with full source code for easy deployment by anyone) to be replicated by others, displaying content according to the wishes and whims of each individual website operator, giving readers ultimate choice over the set of moderation opinions they wish to heed. steemit.com 9 of 22 Finally, a set of to-be-determined cosmetic features of a community’s profile page will be configurable by the community maintainer(s), to engender a feeling of ownership and control over the namespace. Target: Q3
Communities are coming to steemit.
We don't know what that will look like exactly.
Imagine a sub-reditt I guess.. and I want all the guitar players to hang out in my group? (for example)
Communities are defined as:
A) - a special group into which others can post articles
B) - build communities in parallel around curating specific types of content valuable to their audiences
The Roadmap seems fairly vague about Steemit Communities, but does discuss 2 types:
communities into which anyone in the world can post (where community founders (or their delegated moderators) can decide, post-hoc, which posts to hide from view)
communities in which only community founders’ (or their delegated authors’) posts will appear
I wanted to start thinking about, who and what creates a sub-group on Steemit?
I'm not really known for being a guitarist, so why would guitarists come to my group, unless I invite them to, and perhaps motivate them to come?
If I tell them I will upvote every post they make in my sub-group (not sure it has a special guitar group name, maybe not).
Conclusions:
We don't know several things:
- what communities look like, as far as how they are presented to users
- we don't know if sub-groups can be named as groups
- we don't know if there is any kind of motivation (beyond taking time to simply invite) for people to join a "Moderator's" sub-group
What else don't we know?
I would also guess, since this document was written Jan 2017, the plan would have changed by 6 months later.. and I have seen no updates on this subject in the past 6 months.
Just got this from @timcliff so I'll post a comment:

Well, by reading this whole 'community' introduction things, I have some concerns of my own. It's really good to hear the word 'community' on steemit. But in reality this would not work well. First of all, no one knows the infrastructure of community making and then managing. Secondly, by augementing this feature with tag feature, there would be a lot of confusion. People won't know what they are searching and what community would belong to which people.
The main concern is that people nowadays, on steemit, don't care about the content very well. They just needs upvotes, that's why a post with $30 upvote and shitty content can do well instead of a high quality content post with $1 upvote. Main power rest in the hands of Whales and they use it expertly among their favorite users or friends.
Instead of communities, steemit needs some inbuilt filters which can filter good content and make it to the hot or trending page. and flag the plaigrized content.
This protocols will soon be used in Peerity.io, a platform which would use Steemit infrastructure but with different style. In peerity, people would be rewarded for contribution their skills and quality content in communities. And they will be paid according to it. Peerity would focus on Communities growth rather than an individualism. That is the concept we need on steemit :) Making communites is easy but managing them and pull out good results from them is the real task.
Anyways thank you @surfyogi sir for sharing this community thread from steemit and adding your opinion.
I completely agree. So I posted about it.
COMMUNITIES: Easily said, VERY DIFFICULT to do in practice..............................
and would probably refocus to communities, rather than individuals, but not sure if that's the plan.
And also, we can now fully expect steemit competitors, and if they have a better idea, they may get some real traction as well.
Yes, if steemit remained exactly the way it is now, its competitors would definitely have real chances to get ahead of it. Peerity.io and calibr.ae are in development and their inception would definitely affect the userbase of Steemit.
I would suggest some more are which could help.
One is to make a websocket based subscription service. it is 1000 times more effective than the api calls. I didn't find any similar service. If we process block information by our own, it is more effective. Especially in actor based development model.
The second objective could be use other services than aws. Multicloud providers makes the service more independent. I would also suggest physical host instead vm's. We will see. I will work on the first topic because it needed for my other developments. If it ready, it will be publicly available.
Communities will likely be small tight knit whale communities with every minnow trying to suck on a teat. The only reason to join the guitar playing community would be to get money from a whale.....not because you like guitars.
I'm 100% certain that delegation is going to become a bigger and bigger part of steem. It's possible that these communities will have a single leader that is a giant whale that is delegating power to sub commanders in order to get more people into the community but those communites will likely become giant circle jerks and pyramid schemes with the largest whales at the top getting most of the money. I'm sure all of it is done in order to help steemit get away from the signal to noise ratio but I really do think that it's not going to help at all but make it worse by increasing the power of the whales...... and I see today that the price is steem is $1.05.
YES... but what do you really think?
You may very well be right; and sometimes I wonder why so much goes on without much updates "from above".
Of course, I think it really depends on having a good idea, of what WOULD WORK, and that's probably where I would ask you, WHAT would that look like?
I think we all agree, that current format can't stand. It won't adapt to having 1 million users, verses the current 300K.
And Reddit went through many of the same growing pains, so what is the solution, that works for everyone financially as well as creatively?
I absolutely adore this photograph. I just love seeing you so jubilant and happy, it is as if it is wiping off on to me haha.
We have so many diverse communities. Not just purely from cultures, traditions and different walks of life but as well as groups forming due to hobbies such as surfing.
I don't know how communities will be laid out but it would be great to see if we can have community headers such as 'surfers' that can bond and converse over their passion.
However I think the problem with this is if anyone is given the power to create a group it may get too fragmented and we will have many little groups popping up leading people to be dispersed creating dead inactive groups or groups with only a few users in them.
Let's see if they will pursue this community aspect since I think it is pivotal to help people fit in and grow rather than being chucked uncharted territory with the only way finding what you like is with tags.
I don't know anything about that man!
I would love to see more transparency from Ned :D
Yes, I agree ;-)
@ned
I resteemed this post! Steem On man!
It will be good and debugging of several accounts begins. But they should also add something so that the people of treding are not always the same
I've heard about the communities as well. I believe it's coming in the next hardfork ? It's quite hard to say or imagine how it will look and how will it serve to steemit but I think it will be a good addition to steemit. Content will be labeled a bit more I guess and it will be easier to find what you're looking for. And for example, if you don't like seeing anything related to crypto currencies, you won't have to see it anymore because you will be in communities that cover different topics.
this totally new topic and new infromations for me and i dont have any idea about this and i also think u r right @surfyogi sir and good for tho share and make a post on it sir
