Am I Hurting My Reputation By Doing This? The Message That Made Me Think
I am closing in on one year here on steemit and I am growing to love it more and more each day. I am beginning to lear more about the crypto-currency scene and finding it intriguing. In believe it has a strong future.
I create my own articles and having people enjoy them and make a little money is just a win win situation.
So just the other day as I was going through my feed and upvoting some well written articles, I got a message that read:
"Hey bud, did you know if you keep upvoting low reputations you will never increase your rep?"
Hmmm, interesting. Am I hurting myself by trying to help.
I feel if I read something of value I will vote on it, no matter of the reputation of the person. That message has made me wonder though.
The way I feel is if someone takes the time to create something that I enjoyed reading and I upvote, wouldn't that help the community.
This what I think, it may be wrong:
1- If I help a person increase there rep by upvoting, that makes the community stronger.
2 - If I support others, hopefully they support me.
3 - If someone eventually gets a higher rep than me that I supported, that will end up helping my rep.
So the message made me think about it and what I did was learn more about how the voting power works. I feel like I have a better understanding of distributing my voting amount.
Will I stop upvoting lower reputation posts? No way, not if I find value in it!
This is a great community and I never thought I would meet so many awesome people from across the world!
I hope this community can keep growing and we all find success in our own way!
What do you think? Am I hurting myself or should I keep on doing what I have been?

This steemit thing is so complex, so interesting, though.
Seems like all these rules are in place to make it difficult for people to spam upvote articles. However, I do not mind upvoting lower reputation members. I don't want to discriminate someone simply for being new, if its good content then it deserves my upvote.
Upvoted and followed, thanks
I agree, if it is good content, then I will upvote. Following you also.
What did you discover? Is it true that upvoting someone lowers your rep? That seems false. But I haven't a clue how one would go about finding out the truth.
I don't know the answer. I am hoping someone would.
I think the answer is "no". I did a few minutes of searches, and nothing I read would lead me to believe that upvoting users with lower values will hurt you. The only thing that can hurt you is being downvoted by users with a higher reputation.
your reputation isn't going down by upvoting others. only the voting power does, and it recovers afterwards. also your reputation can only go up if a person with a higher reputation upvotes you. cheers :)
I've always tried to vote for things I feel deserve a vote, was not even aware of that dynamic.
Yeah, I'm not sure it is does or not. It would suck if it does hurt.
This a great message to all steemians!
Thank you!
There's the idealism of steem, the reality of steem and in-between are the rules. Rather than game the rules for profit, I'm voting based on the ideals of steem and hope the rules change to never be too far out of line with the ideals.
tl;dr I upvote quality content. To hell with my rep.
I feel it will keep people engaged and make the community stronger
Even do i am new here and i do not have a lot of power in voting i always vote posts or comments that i like as i am thinking that like this i can show my support. Now everybody of course have his own style so ... By the way congratulation for almost one year here on Steemit! Keep up the good work and always do what you think is the best to do!
Thanks for the comment! Following you also!
Thanks a lot! I am as well and i am looking forward to read your future posts!
It confuses me at the best of time. My voting power is PANTS at the moment!!!.. All I know is that I upvote writing I relate to & its hard to pass something by if you enjoyed it !!
Upvote to that 👍
It is hard not to vote on something that you find interesting. I think your engagement with quality content and comments should be considered for reputation also. Thanks for commenting. Following you.
Agreed, Its almost impossible to not click the 'Upvote' when you find something that interests you. As for me I especially love to read creative writing pieces, photography and Art - when I see another expressing their creativity and talents , I think it should be rewarded !
Thank You! I am following you also =)- Hope that you have a wonderful Day/Night new follower =)
You also!
I agree completely. You up vote the content you like. In the long run that will benefit because you expand your network a bit more with each show of support. In the long run it is in my opinion the better route.
Thanks for the comment. Following you now.
As a total minnow, I appreciate support from whomever in the Steemit community. And your commitment to helping those you find "add value" reminds me of my dear friend, @globocop. He understands the voting system, and all that. I do not. Bless his heart, he could (and has) explained it to me 40 different ways... giggles
At any rate, I appreciate any support I can get.
I just started learning about the voting system. There is so much to learn here but I found there is also many people willing to help which makes it a great community.
Yeah, I'm thankful for that; that there are many great people in the community. I'm more than a little timid, when it comes to Steemit. I hesitate to upvote posts at times, because I'm convinced that it's somehow "hurting the whales"
Great ! I like your way of thinking, actually helping lead on to success and growth wish u a good luck in the future !
Thanks, you also!
I tried to figure out the reputation score calculation, but the only thing that I could find told you how to convert a raw score into a condensed score. It is a logarithm, BTW. Not very helpful.
The real question is how do you get your raw score?
After reading the other comments, I think we are all counting on @ptmikesteem to figure it out. School us.
I really wish I could lol
