Searching for Steemit language communities #3: Latvian

in #steemit7 years ago

Not all communities on Steemit work like Korean, Spanish or even Polish - there are many “terra incognita” on language map of the world. Ten months ago I have created Map and analysis of ALL non-English European communities on Steemit with my advices about tags and since then many people came and some of them went away. Steemit had it’s ups and downs. English is still the main language on this platform but others make their own tag enclaves and it’s working quite good for them.

In this series I would like to focus on those languages. I will try to find non-English communities and if it won’t be possible - maybe it will help to create such communities in the future? Few advices regarding tags included!

And today I will write about Latvian.

Informations

Official language in: Latvia.
Native speakers: 1.75 million (2015).

Latvian as primary language used at home (based on 2011 census data) from Wikipedia

Ten months ago it looked like this:

There were three posts but only from one author. Not a community at all at that time.

What have changed since then? Let’s have a look (till the end of March).

Every time there is an asterisk (*) with number of authors it means that some of them wrote in more months but they are counted only once.

KRIPTOVALUTA

This is more a fun fact than a tag to build a community. It’s a Latvian word for cryptocurrency but... it’s also a Hungarian word with the same meaning - so 10 out of 12 other posts are in Hungarian language. There were only two Latvian authors and they mostly wrote in January, there were no posts in March.

LATVI

This is probably just a misspelling because latvi is neither an English nor Latvian word. Only two posts in total so nothing to worry about.

LATVIA

English name of country - so it’s the same as always - not a good choice to start a language community. In every month there were more other posts than actual Latvian posts. And there are only four authors in that long period of time!

LATVISKI

Finally a good place for a Latvian community! No foreign posts with this tag and that’s something not easy to find. Too bad it all stopped in December 2017 but still there were only few posts written by three authors.

LEMONA

Another fun fact. Name of this tag is also a name of a bot user who published a lot of posts in many languages as some kind of news compilation. In this tag you can find 39 different languages so it’s quite a mess.

LV

This is an ISO code for Latvian language. It could probably work as language community tag - it’s not like there are no similar solutions used in other communities. But there is another problem, and that’s the number of posts. One was published a half year ago and now two in March. It’s hard to say anything.

MIWA

Internet says: Marine and Inland Waters Administration (State Environmental Service; Ministry of Environment; Latvia). I thought it has something to do with Latvia, but it looks more like a third fun fact rather than something serious. There were only four posts in October and November.

Other Latvian posts

Like always, there are posts written in language but they simply have random/wrong tags so it’s almost impossible to find them. Also, there are a lot of spam bots which publish quotes or other stuff found on internet.

Community...

There are not so many Latvian posts and the best option for building Latvian language community - latviski - was used last time in December. This will be even harder than it sounds. There is always another option with lv but as we could see, it’s also used by another languages. Anyway - good luck!

Past posts

Next languages?

I have some propositions for next parts of this series: Bulgarian, Romanian, Czech, Slovak and Ukrainian.

What do you think about this post? What language would you like to see next? Will it help somebody?

I've been looking for Latvian steemians ever since registering here and I only found a couple. I would be happy if I found a way to popularize steemit among Latvians. I believe they could benefit from it.

That's really awesome work you are doing, and this way other languages can be developed because Steemit can reach towards more communities and in turn it will boost the Platform. And in my opinion the translation part is really effective and in my opinion if more translators increased then that will add more effectivity. Thanks for sharing and wishing you an great day. Stay blessed. 🙂

Have you tried #latvian? (1 post, 5 days ago)

There was also at least one post using #lat (5 months ago) ;)

This is post give me inspiration to write post with Gayo Language. Gayo is one of ethnic in Indonesia.
