1 Week On Steemit: Weekly Roundup Post

in #steemit6 years ago

Good Evening Steemians!

Happy Friday :)
This evening marks my first full week here on Steemit, and I can safely say – it’s a love thing!
Yup, I’m hooked - but my 'L' plates are still firmly in place!

As I’m a whole week ahead of someone starting out today (and the world of Steemit moves fast!) here are...

4 little things I’ve found useful this week:

  1. If you’re struggling to keep on top of who’s following you, this site allows you to check out who has followed you (in date order – phew!) It can also show you who you’re following, who has resteemed you and who you have resteemed.

  2. Building up a good reputation score (that little number in brackets) is to be so important on Steemit. It’s an instant indicator for your rep status in the community. I wanted to keep a closer eye on how I was building this, and have been using Steem Now – which shows your score with an extra 2 decimal points. Good to know how far you are off of the next number up! The site also gives you summaries of all sorts of other good info about your account – upvote stats, comments and all manner of exciting stuff. I've found it great to have a quick check of what's going on using my phone during a busy day - all the info in a quick snapshot. And if you’re feeling strategic, you can also check all of these details about other users’ accounts too!

  3. Follow only accounts you genuinely want to follow – don’t fall down the rabbit hole of follow4follow. By being a bit more… choosy… about the content you want to consume, your feed becomes a joy to delve into and read, rather than a fast-moving mash-up mess.

  4. When you leave comments, make them count. There’s nothing worse than a throw-away comment that’s clearly just fishing for a quick upvote. (“Great” - rather a let down after an hour of working away at your post and sharing your heart and soul with the community!) Read thoroughly, respond thoughtfully, and you might find you’re making longer lasting friendships as well as contributing to the conversation.

4 little questions I’m hunting for answers to:

  1. Can someone tell me about witnesses and witness votes? I get that they’re the big bods around here… but other than that, I’m a bit clueless!

  2. Upvoting your own posts. Now, as far as I understand it so far, upvoting your own posts is fairly common, but upvoting your own comments is seriously frowned upon (though I have read posts where the upvoting your post is bad too!) Can anyone shine some light on this? Is there a best practise?

  3. Voting bots – Good? Bad? Ugly? Again, searching this brings up a huge range of oppinions which vary so widely it’s impossible to get a feel for it.

  4. Affiliate links- are they allowed? I’m talking about a simple text link to a book on Amazon within a book review- nothing more flashy!

There seem to be several potholes newbies can tumble down without realising they’re in danger- and the last thing I want to do is annoy or anger the community by making a mistake! Thanks for your help!

Steemian Spotlight

In my Friday evening roundup posts, I’d like to give a shout-out to a Steemian each week who has caught my eye, for whatever reason. This week – it’s the wonderful ...

@dreemsteem

Dreemsteem has made my first week here a real joy. She has commented, chatted, encouraged, advised and supported. She is, quite simply, magic. Please go and check out her blog if you haven’t already, and show her lots of love, because she’s awesome!

And that’s it from me for week 1. PHEW!
Any advice, hits or tips (and of course, follows and upvotes ;) ) would be very welcome.

See you tomorrow,
Eveningart x

P.S can anyone tell me how to 'centre' text - it's driving me bananas!! :)

Sort:

Evening @eveningart :D are you around anywhere right now?

Answers to questions as far as I know........this does not, in any way, make them 100% correct but just the rules I follow....

  1. Tips and Guidelines 💡: Voting for Witnesses by @drakos who is a Witness and a darn great one at that. :D

  2. As a newbie upvoting your own post is not frowned upon. With voting, you want to keep your voting power above 90% as much as possible which means you get 10 100% votes a day. So yes, voting on your own comments to bring them up to the top of the comment section is frown upon. Some people still do it but I don't do either.

  3. Voting bots............ really depends on who you talk to. Here is a post by a Witness and my friend @enginewitty that loves bots So Far, So Good! You can find a million posts about how they are ruining the true meaning of the blockchain also but as of right now they are here to stay no matter how you feel about it. If I were you I would try and reach out to @enginewitty to see if he can explain it much better then I ever can. Trust me on that one LOLL

  4. Yes ?
4a. Are you selling your own book? then 100% yes. Your footer of your posts kind of ends up being your ADD space. You can use it to show support for groups you are in, Witnesses, Contests you love being a part of and hope to help get the word out about and help in the sales of a book you might have written.

4.b. If you are writing a post about a book you are talking about then, by all means, you should add a link to the book you are referring to.

4.c. @byn has a great 'footer' always. take a gander at her and her posts. She is a great writer, a sweety and funnier than all get out!! so really in all ways, you can not go wrong checking out her posts.

To center text or photos:

Hope this helped!! and thank you for your great comments on my posts :D You could not have picked a better person to highlight then @dreemsteem for your first week on Steemit!!! She has a heart and soul that is so full of love and giving she makes you just want to be near her and giggle :D

Happy Weekend and so happy you had a great first week!!!

A very happy weekend to you my friend! I reckon we might have vastly different time-zones ;)

Thank you so much for your incredible comment and all that delicious information - it's incredibly generous of you to take the time to share all this with me and clear up my random newbie wonderings!

I'll check out the accounts and links you have sent me through - but have already headed over to follow @byn and have fallen in love with her posts- going to go and binge-read her blog later ;) I do love what she does with her footer section, so will have a think about how I can adopt something similar.

Again, thanks so so much for all the info.
E xx

@snook thank you for your really detailed reply. Most of the questions that @eveningart has asked are things that I really wanted to know the answer too as well. Even though I opened my account last year I have not been active on here until this week. I am also very addicted too!

What I love about it though is I have been inspired to WRITE. I have never really enjoyed writing having preferred video and it is much faster for me. I know that deep down I have always wanted to but wasn't sure if I could. Years of 'technical' writing I thought had destroyed my voice ... but I think it might be coming back. Hurrah!

Anyway thanks so much again!

Keeping your feed clean (and occasional spring cleaning) is so important as your feed is really the only way to consistantly find relevant content.

A few thoughts about your questions -

  1. Week one is a little early to start worrying about witnesses, consider choosing a proxy (@snook for example) while you learn more. You can change this at any time.

  2. I am opposite of many. I upvote my comments to rise above on overloaded posts. Your vote is your stake. But consider what message you are sending by looking at the proportion (steemreports.com makes charts!). If you only upvote yourself, you are not making community.

  3. Again, dont get ahead of yourself. Like most things in life there are shades of grey and you will get the hang of it. Generally never profitable except in very specific circumstances, and small amounts do not give you any visibility. Early voting by bots actually discourages organic votes because of the way the curation algorithm works.

  4. Do it! Best practice is to state that a link (or some links in this article) are affiliate links.

Here's to another great week!

Hi!
Thank you so much for taking the time to send me such great advice. I think you're right- it's too easy to get ahead of yourself on here and worry about things, when actually writing content, building community and making links to others and having some fun with it is way more important :) Hope you have a great week too, E x
