Do you Have your Steemit Password Saved in Your Browser? It Can Be Hacked in Less Than a Minute // Interview with IT Pro @raised2b

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

Hi Friends!

I am really excited to bring you a new interview series with @raised2b. He is an IT Professional and longtime crypto researcher and investor. He has a wealth of knowledge that can be extremely beneficial to this community and so I’ll be picking his brain on camera to bring you guys some great content. He has the rare ability to understand things on a deep, technical level and then distill the information in a way that is digestible for a more general audience. This is part of why his IT Company is booming with clients!

He probably spends more time watching videos and reading content about different developments in the world of Information Technology and Cryptocurrencies, than anyone I know. For example… we watched an interview of @lukestokes during dinner last night. #nerdycryptocouple

In case you didn’t catch my reference just there… @raised2b is my boyfriend and so we are able to do the interview series live from his living room.

I think this interview series could be really dynamic. I am a more “general user” that is non-technical, but has a lot of questions. He is the technical guy that digs into all of the details. I hope that the combination of my questions, and his ability to respond in a meaningful way will be helpful to the Steemit community!

Today’s Interview Topic – Saving Passwords in your Internet Browser

The information in this video applies to saving any password in your browser, but is especially important in the world of cryptocurrency. There is no “Customer Service” line to call to re-set your password if something goes wrong. There is no recourse if someone steals all of your money. I think what shocked me the most from this interview was that a password saved in a browser could be so easily hacked in less than a minute.

In this interview, we address the following topics:

  • Why is it bad to save passwords in your browser, and how easy is it really to get access to it?
  • The two ways that someone could steal those passwords – remotely and in person. @raised2b talks about the various ways that someone could hack the passwords if they have your phone, laptop, or tablet in person – and also how they can hack it remotely.
  • Ways to guard against remote hacking.
  • Are macs more secure than PC’s? Are certain browsers safer than others?
  • Most people save passwords for convenience. What are the easiest ways to quickly access your passwords while keeping it secure?
  • We talk about the various Steem private keys and what level of risk you are exposing yourself to, depending on which key is saved in the browser. Click on that link to read an awesome article written by @raised2b helping people better understand the different private and public keys we have here on Steemit.
  • Why would someone want to hack me?? I’m just a girl posting ukulele videos online. (Insert your own line of reasoning here.)
  • Ok, let’s say by now someone is realizing the mistake of their ways. Can people clear this data? What should they do next?

What Topics Are You Interested in Seeing Next?

This will be the first of many potential interviews – so please let me know if you have any questions you’d like to see us cover! It could be anything regarding security, information technology, computer science, blockchain technology, etc.

I am planning to do an interview all about SMT’s next. I have a lot of questions about what they will actually look like when they come online, how it will change the community, and how people can get involved. If you have any questions on SMT’s or have suggestions for other topics – let us know! This guy could talk for hours.

Thanks for Watching!

I really hope you enjoyed this interview and I would love to hear if you have any questions regarding password protection. If I am not able to answer – I’ll touch base with @raised2b and we will get you an answer!

Have a wonderful day!

@coruscate and @raised2b

This video is approximately 14 minutes in length.

Dang! It's just so convenient! I will have to change some things! Very helpful video! Thanks Lea!

I hear ya!!! It seems like a pain to use a password manager at first, but it really only takes an extra second, and you get used to it after a while. :-)

The motivation for me, was thinking about how terrible it would be to completely lose my Steemit account. Not just the funds, but all of the work I have done to build my reputation on the platform.

Glad you found this helpful!

This is great Lea! What is a good password manager for mac? Great info to give to all of us out there! Be safe guys! Be safe!

I used to be guilty of saving my passwords in a browser, until he really showed me how easy it was to hack! Pretty scary!

For Mac - Keepass is a good free option. It is an open source software. I personally use 1Password though and that is the main one he would recommend too. It cost money, but is so easy to use. I can quickly access my passwords on my laptop, iPad and iPhone in seconds.

Hi coruscate,

Very useful and important topic, security for me. I have some passwords saved on my browser so, I better delete them some how.

I’m so glad you found this post helpful!! If you Google “Clear password data” for the browser you are using, instructions on how to clear it should come up. From what I understand, it is pretty complicated to clear it though. It might actually be easier to just reset your password and then don’t save the new one. :-)

I hope that helps, but let us know if you have any other questions!

Thank you for the in depth instruction. Appreciated.

important topic! I am quite discontent that i need my active key in order to use steem connect. I fear someone could access my funds. Maybe @raised2b could adress the security of steemconnect within a post?

I need steemconnect in order to use Dlive and busy.org.

Ooh that is s GREAT question! Maybe we can make a video talking about it.

He used to make more informational vlogs and blogs, but his businesss keeps him so busy that he doesn’t really have time to create content.

That’s why I thought these interviews could be a great option. That way, we as a community can still tap into his knowledge and he can earn some money. (We are sharing the rewards from any collaborative post we do.)

Anyway, thanks for the great topic idea and I’m glad you found this helpful!

Thanks for enlightening us. I used to use SteemConnect as well and now, until I get some clear answers, I’ll just manually sign in everytime I want to login.

the first thing i did was disable that feature in chrome. it is so sketchy because if you get access to anybody pc for just a minute you can figure out if they are a steemit user and what their password is. quite a security flaw.

Awesome! You are in a rare group of people that is doing it right. :-)

Wow its very useful post, thanks to share.

Thanks @tangera! I’m glad you found it helpful.

Madam, do you have any reviews on gold? I have seen a number of revisions which seem to be very extraordinary and there are a lot of things to understand about which you discuss.

I think you are discussing very important things because at the present time, gold is a very popular subject and everyone has this demand so much that it will play a very effective role in your report too.

Gold? I’m not following... this interview was about password protection and security.

Oops! Madam, I think there was something wrong here. I do not want to repeat this mistake, so I am commenting on your content related to the comments that you may not understand me wrong!

"You are dreaming to discuss the very important subject matter, one of the most important things for the present time, depends on the object committee, the present society and community security has been approved by several activities here because there are many important activities of cryptocurrency or Bitcoin being held here in my mind Are these more about our community members? There is a need to stay protected"

I've been using KeePass and miniKeePass(iPhone) for years. I like the fact that I can keep them local, but synchronize my phone and computer.

LastPass is good too.
