Brayut announces end of "military rule" in Thailand

Thailand's military junta leader Pariut Chan Ocha ordered the end of military rule before his new civilian government was sworn in, but he kept the powers of search and arrest in the hands of the security forces.

Since Brayot took office in 2014, his military council has issued more than 500 orders under Article 44.

Brayot will become a civilian prime minister after being selected by senators appointed by the military council and members of parliament who won an election on March 24.

The order issued by Barayot on Tuesday, and it was the latest decisions of the military council, ended the restrictions on the media and on the issues of civilians from military courts to civilian courts.
"I will not use Article 44 again," Brayot told reporters at the government headquarters in Bangkok. "These orders did not cause problems, they were issued to solve problems."

However, the Thai government said some of the orders issued by the military junta would remain in place, for example giving the army and police freedom to search, summon and detain people for seven days in national security cases.
