Hmm. I'm reserving judgement. Knowing how academic articles are tied up in the copyright of the publishing journals (even though the research is often paid for by public funding - a disgrace that seems to run under the radar), I don't see how these apps can bypass the journals and make these articles open access. At least, without being sued by the journals because they legally own the articles. For anyone who really wants to read an academic article without paying the stupid price often attached, the best thing to do is to mail the author directly. Having said that, I'll download the app and see how it works out.
