Why don't we do more soft Promotion of Steem?

in #steem6 years ago (edited)
I've been wondering about this lately. I mean, I know there are quite a few Steemians that do, but why aren't we all doing it? Just be perfectly clear, I'm not talking about cheerleading for Steem screaming to the moon or anything ridiculous of the sort. I'm talking about cross pollination of content. Sharing links to Steemit Articles, to Dtube videos, etc on other platforms.

Shilling harms

Hence why the word today has a negative tinge. Most users of the cryptosphere or even those who are just considering it, perceive it to be a common tactic of ponzi schemes, mlms and other dubious business models. Of course, this does not mean that because someone is shilling a particular coin, that coin itself is a scam. However, as they say - "Perception is truth" - So denying the harm outrageous shilling can do to a cryptocurrency is counter productive.

This is and was mainly my issue with the numerous youtube videos calling for Steem to take over bitcoin in five years or even worse, claiming that if you become a steemian you can make 1000X times more than you do on youtube. The common yet ridiculous practice of overpromising and under delivering has done wonders to make sure that people leave disappointed feeling scammed.

Soft Promotion: The Ninja's way

We can and probably promote the usage of the Steem blockchain by demonstrating how it works. If I'm creating content, as I am at the moment, writing articles of note, uploading videos to dtube, etc. I'm simply using the dapps built on Steem as intended. However, the underlying implication of sharing these videos, posts, or what have you, is that more people get to glance at the ecosystem and possibly pose the important question.

What is this whole steem thing about?

Out of those who do, there will be some that will decide to join, give it a try and hopefully our user base can grow organically. Without having to overpromise, shill or anything that destructive to the overall ecosystem. I for one believe that any message that comes even remotely close to the idea of "Come here, get rich" Should be perceived by the community as toxic, but that's my biases speaking.

So here is my proposition

I'm considering starting this with @helpie and maybe I will be the first one to put this foot forward. If you are a twitter user, or a Facebook user, and you are interested in soft promoting Steem. Creating quality content and sharing it to other platforms. You can start using the hashtag #softpromo and add the link to the social media website you've decided to share with. I will try my best to do some hand curation with @helpie.

In order to make this happen, I will probably set the tag on ginabot today, in an attempt to be more efficient. But, in truth, this could benefit all of us, regardless of how much Stake you hold. It's a long term move mind you, but one that most of us are failing to capitalize on and the little buttons are right there.

What do guys think? Does this not make sense?

I like it. I was planning to do this anyway. It has taken me 4 months to get 15 sp and my acct to be worth $30 without buying steem or using bots besides msp. I want to tell newbies and strangers to steemit that it is (a) worth it and fun and (b) not a scam and (c) not a path to fast money

Keep it up!

Well, I hope to see your posts then... the tag might change as someone pointed out some better names.

Will there be another post when the idea and tag are finalized?

Yes, I'm sure that's how this will turn out. I'm going to wait for more input from others. But yeah!

Also consider buying some steem...that is a vote of confidence as well. .

i intend to, but i have no other crypto besides 59 dogecoin and I cannot figure out how to use fiat on the exchanges.... as soon as i know how, i probably will.

Makes sense. I do this already but truthfully I probably post more youtube content on steemit than the other way round.

I def love posting my big posts on facebook and I do get readers but no signups yet.

yes for sure. i have another little steemhelper first coming up but have been thinking for a long time to do a very simple service which hooks in ur social profiles (twit, fb at first) and then lets u autoshare any content u post on steem on those other channels you connected. what would you say? useful?

I really like that idea @roelandp , as pretty much apps like instagram sync with Facebook and such , so you can share your story, photo , song snippet , article etc and it automatically posts it on other social media. It can be a ninja way of soft promotion , if it added a little footer ''Posted from my steemit(or any app used) account" with a small link it could lead to a curious click that could mean another member getting onboard.

It is funny but just ''saving a few clicks'' can do a lot of things on a web based world as users always prefer to have it all served in the plate . I can include myself there .. I don't use facebook anymore but sometimes I share a song snippet through my instagram and let it sync.. if not ..my facebook would be a completely dead account by now. So , short answer : YES! it would be very useful! Cheers :D !

That's perfect @roelandp we need more cross pollination.. cheering steem to the moon only towards steemians does little to attract more users of our token.

Hey @roelandp - that would be useful! I nearly followed this post by @anarcotech in April when I was doing a bit of social media sharing in advance of the London Show.....but in the end just seemed easier to do manual share for me. I know you and Dylan are both techy - so this probably is really straightforward for you, and I just thought I would share just in case there is a shortcut or something useful in this post for your upcoming project: https://steemit.com/tutorial/@anarcotech/how-to-automatically-push-your-steem-blockchain-posts-to-twitter-or-pretty-much-any-other-platform-in-2-minutes

yes! 100 points! ifttt is the best. i wasnt aware of an rss feed. oh wait u hacked that one. love it! would it make things easier to have a dedicated service for steem? i only want to make stuff people actually use.

thanks for your link. great hack!

A think the service you propose also sounds very useful. There are some good ideas on @meno's page - it probably all warrants a Community Ideas Survey to gather a consensus!! (PS that link was all Dylan's work)

I like it! I've shared a few of my Steemit posts to FB, but honestly since I discovered Steemit I use FB less and less. Here's a reason to put my FB acct to good use. 😉

I deleted my FB, but I'm sharing on the twitterland... I don't have metrics, since views were removed. But, I'm hopeful it's doing something.

Never did get the hang of Twitter. I guess I'm just too chatty for it. I like using lots of words! 🤣

Hey Meno - totally agree...… I think your tag might need some other ideas #SteemShare #SteemMediaShare - I think you have come across #promo-steem but if you tag your post you with promo-steem you might get some more feedback from promoters. It might be that #promo-steem is a useful tag for this niche area of promoting too.

I think it is a great idea to do the soft share. Just as a way of intro to the promo-steem tag: If you get three upvotes from community approved Steem Ambassadors and use the promo-steem tag you can an upvote from the @steem-ambassador account which has nearly 50,000 Steem Power including @roelandp delegation. Steem-Ambassadors curate for high quality posts about promoting the STEEM Blockchain and Steemit. Cheers @cryptocurator

that's kind of it... whatever tag we end up using, I don't want it to be too obvious. If it even smells like shilling, even remotely, then it defeats the purpose.

Here is a link to my attempt at promotion on twitter!

Just gave you a little updoot! :) keep it up!

Thanks dude! We are the owners of STEEM and it's growth is in our hands.

I would suggest a universal tag that we use here and in all media platforms

My suggestion

#MySteemSecret
#MySteem
#TrySteemit

I like #mysteem <--- that one seems very benign yet it sparks curiosity.

How do we spread the message?

I like #mysteem too, non threatening and personal

its perfect, i think you nailed it... I already got started ;)

Um. Maybe #softpromotion ? Just so those of us that are cross-eyed don't see something else that is pretty darn similar visually but is dirty.

You be right... kabir's suggestions are pretty excellent too.

i dig it! i'm pretty active on instagram and am sharing what i'm doing on steemit/dtube fairly often on there. i've already attracted a couple people to the platform... but really it's also just about exposure. if people see it enough from people that they know/are interested in/trust to some degree, it will just keep gaining traction. i also think, yeah, i may start some youtube series on it! steem for the future!

Awesome!! I knew you guys would be the type of Steemians to take this initiative! :)

Lately I've been thinking a lot about how being a part of the Steemit community has helped me in so many ways while I have been finishing my music degree in college. I love the fact that I can be a part of a community, do and share a lot of what love and have a passion for, and receive and share benefits for it 😏
This has really urged me to promote Steemit and share it with others using other social platforms, and I agree with your idea of soft promotion.
I also believe that Steemit should be realistically promoted so others who join the community do not feel disappointed or scammed later on.

Also, Id like your opinion on an idea.
At the college where I attend, there is a music building (where I practically live haha 😂) with numerous boards where posters can be put up for hundreds of people/students to read. I've had an idea to make a poster promoting Steemit and giving details on how they can join and be a part of it.

Do you think this would be a good idea? I'm asking for opinion because it's an idea that I'm still considering!

I do, granted "the trick" if you will is to present it in the right light. The emphasis should be on something along the lines of "come join our community, learn about cryptocurrencies and a new way of rewarding social value."

Anything that presents it or even hints to the idea of - "Come get rich" should be avoided imo.

So essentially the focus should be more on being a part of the Steemit community and learning about a new way of supporting and rewarding that involves cryptocurrencies.

That suggestion is a very good one and one I will remember!
I also agree that Steemit should be portrayed realistically so that others don't have huge expectations of "instantly getting rich" and are a part of the community primarily for the social aspect and value of it.

Thanks for the suggestion!
