I also created a path on the patio and cleared the sides of the house. There is a space about 2 cm wide between the sidings and the sheathing boards. Snow or anything else must not obstruct the gap from below because air must circulate in the gap to carry moisture away. Even in a normal wall structure with vapor barriers on the warm side of the thermal insulation, that is necessary. In our house that has wood fibre insulation and no vapor barriers, it is even more of a necessity.

Well, that's a logical thing to assume. But what happens is that because the roof extends several tens of centimeters away from the walls, the walls stay mostly clear of the snow. It just happens that because a lot of snow fell from the roof that the patio in the backyard had so much snow that some of it fell against the walls. The walls are way too strong to be affected by the amount of snow against them, which did not exceed about 30-40 cm anywhere. If could be different if 3-4 meters of snow had fallen.
I feel for you, that's a lot of snow. And shoveling is HARD work. What is the temp like to go with all that snow? We've had some wicked cold temps lately but thankfully not much snow. I bet a lot of people never clear the snow from around the sides like you explained. I never thought about it.
It's about +2 C or about 34 F right now. I did the clearing near the footing of the house only on the patio. Elsewhere the eaves help keep the snow from reaching the sidings.

It was necessary to do it this weekend because it's going to be freezing out there from Tuesday on again. That wet heavy snow would've frozen and become harder to shovel.
