Climbing and My City

I didn't manage to get a second post with photos in last night, as I was helping @caitycat get dialed in to what Steemit is all about, so I decided that I would write a short (that's the plan at least, I tend to get excited and ramble) post this morning while sipping on my first coffee of the day. I know that I'm a little late to jump into the 30-day challenge (unless 30 days can start from whenever, because why not, it's only a calendar), but I'm going to do 30-days of stream-of-conciousness blog posts on whatever I happen to be doing (work, cycling, climbing, squash, yoga, python, blender, relaxing, whatever)

Only lost a little bit of skin. That ain't so bad.

Yesterday was one of my first days back at the climbing gym after the holidays wrapped up, and probably only the 5th time I've been since I crushed my thumb in mid October. Going from thinking about climbing all day and climbing 3~4x per week, to barely climbing at all in 3 months has been a real challenge for myself. But I'm back at home now, and my thumb is healed up well enough that it's not longer an injury. I could definitely tell that I did nothing but drink beer and eat chocolate for the last 10 days... A little wigglier and jigglier than I had hoped -- but it's a good metric to start from and get ready to tighten things up from. Myself and @somebuttstuff decided to let our first day back at the gym by a 'fun climb' kind of day, and just get on the ropes. On Monday, we'll start back up with the routine we've set from the Rock Climbers Training Manual, which I'll elaborate on further in upcoming posts about training. For now? I've got my running gear with me to get some fresh air at lunch, then it's Squash with the boys after work, and hopefully some yoga to round out the day.

For some reason, I thought it would be fun to take a couple pictures of my dark, yet colourfully lit walk to the office this morning.

Dark, yet twinkly

There are some pretty cool gothic style buildings and churches in this city

But there's also a BOOMING tech-scene. Welcome to Fort Tectoria

One of the things I love most about my job (municipal engineer) is that I finally get to work on projects that directly affect my community, rather than just building oil-field landfills in the middle of bush country. I get to walk right down Fort St (one of the main drags in Victoria) and look at the construction of the new cycling lane infrastructure we're building.

Working on some fresh bike lanes. Remember: Riding you bike burns fat and saves you money, but driving your car burns money and makes you fat.

This guy has been my holiday wingman -- but not smooches yet. Thanks for tryin' brother!

After a short 9 minute walk from our cozy apartment, I get to work. One of the best things I've done recently is move closer to town (or maybe the best part was getting a job downtown?), and eliminating the lengthy commute out of my daily routine. I pour myself a coffee, stare out the window, and write this post. Have a good day doing whatever it is you all do outside of sharing your thoughts on the internet. For me -- I've got to get to work. Be well.

This is where the magic happens!

How do you recognize a climber? They always look at their hands. ;-) I catch me all times doing it...

Victoria is beautiful and doing something for the community is worth getting up for. 👍

Hahahaha too true. Looking at their hands. Shaking their arms out. Staring off in the distance at boulders and mountains.

We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful city! And I am jealous of the view from your desk... can you see the Legislature from there? Or just the tippy top of the Empress

I can see a couple of the copper tops of the Ledge from here. It's definitely a pretty dope vantage point. When the sun is coming in full-blast though, it can get pretty blinding and hot -- it's a big window and I need to wear sunglasses at my desk.. Talk about first-world problems.
