The Brewery

William Robinson purchased the Unicorn Inn from Samuel Hole on 29 September 1838. His eldest son George brewed the first Robinsons Ale there in 1849. In 1859, Frederic Robinson took over from George and bought a warehouse to the rear of the inn to expand brewing capacity. As a result, Robinsons ale became available at pubs around the Stockport area. To control the quality of ale sold, Frederic began to purchase public houses. From 1878 until his death in 1890, Frederic established twelve pubs which exclusively served his ale. This was the beginning of what was to become an estate of over 300 pubs across the North West of England and North Wales.

So it is obvious that Robinsons is one of oldest British brewers. The brewery continues to be run by the fifth and sixth generations of the Robinson family. Robinsons is also one of the most advanced and sophisticated breweries in the UK, with a worldwide reputation for real ale. It’s also home to the largest hopnik in the world and is based in the heart of Stockport for almost two centuries from 1838, and owning around 280 tenanted and managed pubs, inns and hotels across the North West.

The Beer

Following the success of Trooper Beer , Iron Maiden and particularly Bruce Dickinson their vocalist , who is a beer aficionado, wanted to brew a Belgian style beer.

This is what he says : “We’re adopting a Belgian yeast for the first time. I’m a big fan of Belgian beers, so I jumped at the chance to brew my own. While I get very excited about experimenting with new formulas and ingredients, the thing about Belgian beer is that it’s as much a way of life as it is a drink. We’ve tried to bottle that philosophy in HALLOWED, albeit with a British twist.”

This means that Hallowed is a hybrid beer inspired by Belgium and brewed in England. Comes in a 330ml bottle and contains 6% alcohol. In the bottle, we see Iron Maiden’s iconic mascot Eddie, robed in traditional monk’s clothing, a tribute to the Trappist monastic brewing tradition in Belgium. It was introduced late 2017.

It is also one of the first beers to be brewed by Robinsons Brewery that uses Belgian yeast and bear in mind that they haven’t changed the yeast used in their beers since 1942. Martyn Weeks, Head Brewer at Robinsons Brewery comments:“It’s all in the yeast. Belgian yeast yields a very distinct taste and presentation. You can sniff out a Belgian beer simply from its aromas: fruity, spicy and earthy. Belgian yeasts withstand higher alcohol levels.”

Traditional when it comes to good food

Here in Greece we have many traditions related to food. And we keep them religiously. But, to be honest we only keep those that have to do with “good food”. What I mean is if it has meat in any way, shape or form we’re into it. If it involves fasting or avoiding certain foods not so much.

Today, we celebrate our Liberation Day and combine it with an Orthodox Christian celebration and long story short today we eat bakaliaros with skordalia. Bakaliaros is codfish which is fried in a beer based crust and skordalia is a garlic based paste. Very strong in taste and because it has so much garlic you don’t want to be around when we eat it. Unless you join the party, which I suggest.

So, as a proud Greek that honors “good food” traditions I bought some bakaliaro with extra skordalia and what better drink than a strong Heavy Metal beer. Hallowed from Iron Maiden is a Belgian style beer.

I open the bottle and fill up the glass. It pours a reddish deep mahogany body with a small, creamy head. Caramel taste, biter with a metallic aftertaste. Not a fan. It’s quite good, but I prefer the Trooper Beer.

"Skordo" is garlic in Greek. So "skordalia" means made of garlic . I wonder if you have something similar.

That looks like a great beer. I’m a fan of the Belgian yeast strains.
