Steemit Ultra Marathon – Game one – round one

in #running7 years ago

We have a nice round number to start off the inaugural Steemit Ultra Marathon race.

Ten brave (and foolhardy) Steemians have taken up the challenge to run 62kms across some of Wellington’s biggest hills and baddest trails.

Let’s meet the starters:

@skymaiden
@len.george
@armintrepic
@dlew
@zapasx
@toofasteddie
@runningdanw
@enigma84
@kiwiscanfly
@godofbit

It is going to be an interesting race, with some of the original testers returning to see if they can conquer the beast and win the prize money.

Here’s what they are racing for

1st place – 20SBD
2nd place – 10SBD
3rd place – 5SBD

So let’s get started

Runners, you need to tell me:

  • How fast you intend to run – a number from 1-15 (you can use decimal places if you like e.g. 5.5)
  • How many hours you intend to run for – a number from 1-2 (you can use a decimal for partial hours e.g. 1.5)
  • How many energy gels you will consume – a number from 0 – however many gels you have (whole numbers only)
  • If you want to rest, how long you intend to rest (in hours) – a number from 1-2 (you can use a decimal for partial hours e.g. 1.5) NOTE: since this is the first round I’m assuming no-one will need a rest yet

Runners have until 9am tomorrow New Zealand time, to tell me their choices. Anyone not replying in the next 24 hours will be classed as DNF (Did Not Finish).

Remember, this race is all about managing the damage. Get to know the course and where you can run fast and where you have to run slow. Get it right, and you can cover a lot of ground. Get it wrong, and you can end up walking for the rest of the race.

On your marks, get set, GO!

Are you new to Steemit and trying to figure out what it's all about?

I'm a bit bummed that I missed the signup period. It would have been awesome if the contest was how far people ran on strava that day :P

you can always catch the next game. And if you follow this one you'll have a head start because you will see what works and what doesn't :-)

As for how far people ran on Strava - yup use that as a guide. I've also added in some modifiers based on my experience in the race. And to be very clear - my times were WAY slower than those people on Strava ;-)

I was referring to a contest where we would post our recorded runs during a whole week for example and there would be prizes for the most km ran that week, largest altitude gained, most time spent running etc. It would get people to actually run :)

Hmmm.......... that has merit ;-)

I'll see what I can come up with. I want to make it fair and possible for anyone to play and win. Not everyone on here is an ultra runner.

It's not a huge deal for me to run 40kms with 1800 metres of elevation gain on a Saturday, but that may not be everyone's cup of tea.

But if I made a bunch of categories so people could enter into their favourite categories and have a chance of winning, that might be fun. e.g. best selfie of running with a cat

Or dirtiest bum / shoes, wettest run, stuff like that.

Then the hard core runners can go for distance and elevation, and the social runners can go for the fun categories.

What do you think?

That would be super awesome :D I would definitely be in with a chance for the dirtiest with the muddy trails around where I live :)

How fast: 5
How many hours: 1.5
Gels: 2
Rest: 0

Thanks for that. Good luck ;-)

62 kms... Okay is this a real run at the moment, or a schedule planning??

I can only say: Good luck to all of you and endless respect and kudos from my side of the earth!

Heroes!

This is a virtual run. I enter their numbers into a game engine and it figures out how far they will go for each turn. the first one to cover 62kms is the winner.

Gotya! Virtual run even, cool I guess even I am capable of that :D

I’m looking forward to this! Point of clarification:

Are the rounds an equal amount of time for each runner? If it’s a set amount of time, wouldn’t

rest time = allotted time - running time

The way ti works, is you tell me how fast you will go and for how many hours - maximum of 2 hours. Then I figure out how far you will go using those values. You don't have to use the whole 2 hours.

So it is a strategic allocation of effort taking into account the terrain you'll be running over. In a way you are trying to second guess the calculations happening in the game engine and trying to match those numbers as close as you can for optimal performance.

For the rest time, how that works is you get 3kms in distance gained for each hour you rest i.e. you are walking. and your damage is cut in half. That enables you to get back running again. One of our testers used this feature to storm home in the finish and cover a lot of ground.

You can look back at the test round and see how the testers got on to give you some idea of what works.

Does that mean I can use 4 hours per round and start the next round at the same time as all of the other runners?

No, the maximum time per round is 2 hours. So you need to think less in terms of hours and more in terms of distance that you can cover for each round. Sometimes it is best to cover less distance in this round and conserve your health, so you can cover more distance in the next round.

For each round you all have 2 hours that you can use. You don't have to use all of the 2 hours however.

This is a turn based game, so think of the numbers you supply me as coming from the throw of a dice (except you get to decide what they are)

Because the terrain changes - remember this race is over some very big hills, you have to try ad figure out the most efficient way to cross the trail in front of you, and you can determine how much of the trail to cover (a bit) by how fast and and how long you run.

I hope that helps.

How fast:4.4
How many hours:2
Gels:1
Rest:0

Cool. Thanks for that.

No problem, one question how many gels we get?

you start with three gels and you get resupplied 1 gel at each aid station (about every 10kms) and you might get lucky and pick on up on the trail, or be given one by a spectator

Ok cool thank you

Does not matter how unfitted you are, just gently start running....
