You are learning quickly. Yes, race day is very much different than your every day routine. As you've said, train in conditions that are somewhat similar to those on your test day.
Or just train and improve day by day, step by step :)
It's a funny thing with running - you get out what you've put in. No more and no less. This is great too. You can't cheat yourself :)
Anyways, keep on pushing. Gradually.
