Steemit Record Pool // Song Of The Day - "To Be Young, Gifted And Black" by Nina Simone

in #recordpool7 years ago

In celebration of Black History Month and continuing my theme for #recordpool this month, I'm moving to the Soulful vibe of Nina Simone and the empowering "To Be Young, Gifted And Black", which appeared on the Black Gold album released in 1970.

In the late 60's Nina Simone embarked a journey back to her roots, redefining her image and committing to her new role as a cultural leader. It was a time empowerment in Black Communities across the US and Nina was identifying with the Black Beauty movement.

“It reflected black pride, and that’s when I changed it. I identified a lot with Africa, and learned what they did, and started wearing my hair in an Afro.” - Nina Simone

Here's a great piece written by Alan Light for The Pool a couple years ago entitled Nina Simone and the Black American woman

Enjoy The Music!

The song, originally written by Simone and Weldon Irvine, also inspired cover version by Bob & Marcia, Donny Hathaway and Aretha Franklin between 1970 - 1972.

There's also a newer remix that i really enjoyed by Tall Black Guy Productions.

Nina Simone.. so much love for this woman! Thank's for sharing.

Mad love to you, your taste in music and actively posting authentic black history. Upvote this post y'all!

Thanks @spazzmatikk, it's important to show love to the foundation as well as create awareness, just playing part in the bigger picture. One!

What a nice post! I have been attracted to her voice since day one, she inspired a lot of what I wrote and sang throughout the years.

I don't know if she would have enjoyed my music, but I know she is a part of my life, like a member of my family, each of her songs can be used to paint my life, from "sinnerman" to "Feeling Good", her voice has a magnetism that will still pull people in 100 years from now

That magnetism! I feel you @edprivat. One!

Yes! And today's artist are so boring, she had THAT MUCH of a personality, didn't get along with everyone, even her own daughter.
Few people have that aura. Apparently Charlie Parker the saxophonist had that type of infectious charisma too, when he entered a room people stopped breathing for a second.

QUEEN!

another new playlist. Thanks for the great sharing bro. much love
