10 Quotes on Writing by Nicholas Sparks

in #quotes6 years ago

1. “I also think it’s important to realize that to get published, you’re not competing against me, or Stephen King, or John Grisham—we have spent years developing audiences that we bring to the table. So, you have to write better than we do, or more originally, or have more original stories, or work in a genre that has a need."

2. “One of the things I do when I write a story like The Lucky One is: I try to move the reader through all the emotions of life.”

3. “"In my books, there’s always a love story and there’s anger, betrayal, jealousy and a struggle. You’ve got to have all of these and, of course, sadness. If you lack one of these, the story feels incomplete – like a fairytale."

4. “In a love story, you have to have a reason the characters can't be together. This provides the struggle. I write tragedies – updated Greek tragedies.”

5. “Yes, somebody always dies. All great love stories, by definition, have to end in tragedy. The greater the love, the greater the tragedy when one of them dies.”

6. “You know a bittersweet ending when you feel it. … And it’s challenging to pull off.”

7. “Some of the reasons readers and critics have given for my books’ popularity are: the novels are easy-to-read and entertaining, the reader is made to feel like “a fly on the wall”

8. “I think it’s important to understand that it is an industry in which the publisher has to sell your book, and if they don’t think there’s an audience for your book, you’re probably not going to get it published.

9. “It’s important to realize that readers are forgiving to a point, in that if you don’t put out your best possible work every time, your audience will begin to fall.”

10. “Villains are for comic books.  A one-dimensional, purely evil character who presents an obstacle to a pair of star-crossed lovers doesn’t function well in the context of a complex, believable love story.  What’s far more interesting and effective is when that antagonist is humanized, and his relationship to the protagonists complicated.”

Thanks for reading.

#6--I don't care for bittersweet endings. I like my happily ever afters. And, a lot of other people do, too. Books are escapism, and there are too many bittersweet things in the real world, so why would I go looking for it in entertainment? It's why I don't watch scary or sad movies. And, romance novel readers, in particular, EXPECT a happily ever after (aka "HEA"). I may put my characters through challenges, but I always give them an HEA. It's what I want to read, and I write for me first, and my audience next.

@stephmckenzie

I write for me first, and then the audience, but I must admit I tend to write bittersweat ending. I mean I have a few Stories That end in "HEA", but the majority are bittersweet. I mainly write fantasy, sci-fy, and horror, but all my stories have a touch of horror in them. I don't know why, It just happens. But I have nothing against "HEA" ending and some of the best stories I ever read end Happy Ever After.
