Stockholm Syndrome its Origin and Characteristics.

in #psychology7 years ago

Many times I saw and heard in movies or series that the subjects passed through a position of kidnapping or being hostages showed moments of high tension and at the time of being released or rescued felt misgivings by the security forces but felt affection for their captors, When they view his reaction, they said: he or she "suffers from the Stockholm Syndrome" or is going through the "Stockholm Syndrome". For a long time, I already knew what it was about but had never studied this topic or how it was developed. people were living or if it left sequels that do not disappear with this syndrome after being rescued.

Origin

In Stockholm-Sweden (origin of his name) on August 23, 1973 there was a robbery in a bank where the kidnapper imposed a series of conditions to the police, demanding arms, means of transport and money, taking three employees as hostages of the bank (two women and one man).

It lasted for more than six days, the kidnapping and negotiations the hostages said that before the possibility of being released they felt fear, without wanting to be rescued by the police and saying that they felt safe during the kidnapping.

At the end of the rescue, none of the abductees declared against their abductors, even one of the workers declared: "I fully trust him, I would travel around the world with him".

Many years later, because of this event, the name Stockholm Syndrome was applied to people who feel identified with their captors when they have been captured or remain detained. This is because the abductee feels identified with the feelings and motivation that they express to the people who have kidnapped him.

What are the characteristics of Stockholm Syndrome

This syndrome has been observed in people who have experienced traumatic events in their lives, in some cases it does not have to be kidnappings by outsiders being or a victim of trafficking in white or prisoners of war, it also occurs in domestic situations such as mistreatment or abuse of children and adults by a family member.

  • The people who generate this syndrome can show rejection in any possibility of being rescued, feeling a union with their abductor and when rescued they could be affected or broken if rescued.

  • Some experts do not dare to say if the members of cults suffer from this syndrome since in many occasions people show reasoning or decision intact, it is a very controversial topic.

  • Since it is not officially recognized as a syndrome, it is difficult to decree characteristics and behaviors that define whether a person suffers it or not.

Causes

The cause of the Stockholm Syndrome is the instinct of survival, the kidnapped person feels influenced by the situation that is feeling his life in danger, this feeling affects the psychological state and affects the difference between the good and the bad.

Treatment

  • As it is not officially recognized, it is treated in the same way as Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

  • The symptoms are similar to those of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

  • The symptoms are: attention deficit, reliving the fact that the trauma has occurred, emotional instability, memory loss, sadness, difficulty falling asleep.

  • It is imperative that the victim recover and get enough self-esteem skills to know the situations he has faced.

Very nice article. I've always been fascinated by Stockholm syndrome. Thanks!

It is a very interesting syndrome! and with few diagnoses in people, they have not deepened their studies

Nice one you've shared here!

hehe, thanks for reading

Maybe this is an evolutionary adaption for those times when the leader of your tribe had to be a 'strong man'. The day would come when another strong man would conquer first the leader of your tribe to become the new leader.

Those who had the genes to become quickly psychologically adapted to accept and even like the new leader would survive. Those who did not would die or not thrive.

The kidnapper is something like that new strongman.

you are very right,, a practice that is based on controlling and demonstrating as a heroism, and giving that security, in a psychological way it is credible ... what a laugh of the new strong man, it is something like "I have you under my feet and you still protect me " and everything was based on evolution and the strongest of mind.
