The French Quarter? - 7 original photos
They call it the French Quarter, but really the architecture is Spanish.
In fact the Spanish completely rebuilt New Orleans. The French speaking people never really left, but the Spanish controlled the region/colony for almost 40 years (1763 - 1803) and the architecture proves it.
The Spanish Government mandated no wood construction after the whole place burned in the war, so stucco and iron details were brought in by Spanish architects.
These Spanish architectural details are still replicated in modern day construction.
I wonder how many of the Spanish architects, whose names still adorn the streets of New Orleans, would feel about the "French Quarter" today.
Would they believe that the buildings they designed would still be standing? Would they be horrified that we associate this construction with anything French?
Maybe, despite the lack of Spanish credit given, I bet they would stick around for the party.
Neither the French, nor the Spanish, are interested in the clean up afterwards. Leave that madness for the Americans :)
Cheers!

Awesome pics! One of my favorite places to visit...the "French" Quarter LOL
I agree!
Plus... the food, it's life changing :)
Don't know, but French certainly are horrified to be associated with anything Spanish! Just kidding, we actually tend to go along really well.
