Bobbio è un borgo medievale in provincia di Piacenza, nella regione settentrionale italiana dell'Emilia-Romagna. È il villaggio più importante della Val Trebbia ed è situato sulla riva sinistra del fiume Trebbia, ai piedi del Monte Penice in una zona ricca di acqua e insediamenti sin dal Neolitico.

I numerosi reperti testimoniano la presenza di varie popolazioni: Liguri, Celti e dopo il 14 a.C. i romani. Il nucleo di Bobium sorse nel 14 a.C. ma la sua storia è inestricabilmente legata a quella dell'Abbazia di San Colombano fondata dal monaco cenobita Colombano che la raggiunse nel 614 quando ricevette questo territorio come dono dal re longobardo Agilulfo. Questo fu l'inizio della storia di Bobbio.

Il nome del borgo, originariamente Bovium e poi Bobbio, deriva dal fiume locale.
Il Borgo fu costruito intorno all'abbazia benedettina di San Colombano, che fu trasferita nella sua attuale posizione nel IX secolo dal Re Agilulfo. Solo una parte del campanile, il pavimento musivo, la cripta e frammenti dell'abside circolare sono sopravvissuti. L'attuale basilica (costruita tra il 1456 e il 1522 sulle rovine di un'antica basilica) ha una navata centrale e due navate laterali.
Nel presbiterio è posizionato il bellissimo organo di legno; il sarcofago di San Colombano risale al 1480 ed è conservato nella cripta. Vicino alla cripta, a un livello sotto il pavimento della chiesa, turisti e fedeli possono ammirare il bellissimo mosaico che si trovava sul pavimento originale dell'antica Basilica.

L'area, su cui si sviluppa la parte abitata, è delimitata dal fiume Trebbia e dominata dal Santuario della Madonna del Penice, che si trova sull'omonimo monte. Il cuore del villaggio ha mantenuto l'architettura medievale perfettamente intatta.
Il simbolo del paese è il famoso Ponte Vecchio, che è anche chiamato "Gobbo" o "Ponte del diavolo" per il suo particolare profilo contorto. Fu interamente costruito in pietra in epoca romana, con un profilo particolare costituito da 11 archi irregolari. Il ponte collega il villaggio all'altro lato del fiume e da esso, con una breve e suggestiva passeggiata sui suoi "dossi", si può ammirare il profilo del paese, il Monte Penice e il territorio che circonda il Trebbia.

Nella frazione di Porta Nuova, Piazza Duomo mostra antichi palazzi e numerosi portici. La Cattedrale fu costruita nell'XI secolo e ampliata tra il 1450 e il 1475, ha una semplice facciata e due campanili dello stesso periodo. Nella frazione di Porta Alcarina, si trova invece il più antico edificio di Bobbio, chiamato "Palazzo della Regina Teodolinda" (XV secolo).

Merita una visita anche il Castello Malaspina-Dal Verme. Costruito nel 1304 da Corradino Malaspina, nei pressi dell'antica Basilica di San Pietro, fu progettato per essere una roccaforte militare. Nel 1341 divenne proprietà della famiglia Visconti. Nel 1436 lo lasciarono come feudo alla famiglia Dal Verme che iniziò a trasformare l'edificio principale in una lussuosa residenza di campagna. Nel XVII secolo fu acquistato dalla nobile famiglia Dal Verme, che la possedette fino al 1956, quando divenne proprietà dello stato. Oggi dell'edificio originale rimane solo il mastio quadrangolare centrale.

Bobbio appartiene al circuito de 'I borghi più belli d'Italia'. Ha anche ricevuto la Bandiera Arancione (un premio turistico nazionale).

Bobbio is a medieval town in the province of Piacenza, in the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna. It's the most important village in the Trebbia Valley and the village is situated on the left bank of the Trebbia River, at the feet of Mount Penice in an area rich in water and settlements since the Neolithic era.

The numerous finds testify the presence of various populations: Ligurians, Celts and after 14 B.C. the Romans. The nucleus of Bobium rose in 14 B.C. but its history is inextricably linked to the one of the Abbey of San Colombano founded by the cenobite monk Columbanus who reached it in 614 when it received this territory as a gift from the Langobard King Agilulf. This was the beginning of the history of Bobbio.

The name of the borgo, originally Bovium and then Bobbio, derives from the local river.
The Borgo was built around the Benedictine Abbey of San Colombano, which was moved to its current location during the 9th century by the King Agilulf. Only part of the bell tower, the mosaic floor, the crypt and fragments of the circular apse have survived. The actual Basilica (built between 1456 and 1522 over the ruins of a former basilica) has one nave and two aisles.
In the chancel is the beautiful wooden choir; the sarcophagus of San Colombano date back to 1480 and is preserved in the crypt. Near the crypt, on a level under the church floor, tourists and faithful can admire the beautiful mosaic that was on the original floor of the ancient Basilica.

The area, on which the inhabited part develops, is bordered by the River Trebbia and dominated by the Sanctuary of Madonna del Penice, which is located on the namesake mountain. The heart of the village has maintained the medieval architecture perfectly intact.
The symbol of the village is the famous Ponte Vecchio (old Bridge), which is also called “Gobbo” (“hunchbacked”) or “Devil’s bridge” due to its peculiar contorted profile; it is entirely built in stone in Roman times, with a particular profile consisting of 11 irregular arches. The bridge connects the village to the other side of the river and from it, with a brief and suggestive walk on its 'bumps', people can admire the profile of the village, the Monte Penice and the territory surrounding the Trebbia.

In the hamlet of Porta Nuova, Piazza Duomo shows ancient palaces and numerous porticos. The Cathedral was built in the 11th century and enlarged between 1450 and 1475, it has a simple façade and two bell towers of the same period. In the hamlet of Porta Alcarina, you will find the oldest building in Bobbio, called “Queen Teodolinda Palace” (15th century).

Also worth a visit the Malaspina-Dal Verme Castle. Built in 1304 by Corradino Malaspina, near the ancient Basilica of S. Peter, it was designed to be a military stronghold. In 1341 it became the property of the Visconti family. In 1436 they left it as a fief to the Dal Verme family who began transforming the main building into a luxurious country residence. In the XVII century it was bought by the noble Dal Verme family, who owned it until 1956, when it became property of the state. Today of the original building only the central quadrangular keep remains.

Bobbio is one of Italy's most beautiful villages ('I borghi più belli d'Italia'). It has also been awarded the Orange Flag (a national tourist award).
