Genzano di Lucania è un borgo della provincia di Potenza, nella regione italiana meridionale della Basilicata. Si trova su un'ampia pianura nell'Alta Valle Bradano ai confini orientali della regione Puglia.

Il popolo di "pagus gentianum", un insediamento romano del VII-VI secolo a.C., si trasferì su questa terra a causa di un'epidemia di malaria, dando origine a quello che oggi è chiamato Genzano. L'area abitata primordiale sembra essere stata fondata sulle rovine di un vecchio "pagus" dell'antica "Bantia", probabilmente nel X secolo.
Anche Genzano Di Lucania, circondata da campi di grano e avvolta dalla natura, come tutti i paesi dell’Alto Bradano, subì l’influenza normanna e le continue evoluzioni delle famiglie feudatarie che la governarono, seguendo tali cambiamenti nella storia, nella cultura e nell’arte, ancora evidenti e vivi nella cittadina.

Infatti, nell'XI secolo la città passò sotto il controllo del normanno Roberto il Guiscardo, e rimase proprietà feudale fino al 1806.

La città è divisa in due parti ben delineate: quella vecchia con vicoli e palazzi antichi, posta su uno sperone, e la nuova, costruita nella parte superiore e in piano della collina, con ampie strade e edifici moderni.

Il centro storico di Genzano, caratterizzato da un labirinto di vicoli e passaggi stretti, ben ricorda il Medioevo e l'assoluta importanza che aveva nel periodo feudale. Contiene numerose strutture medievali, tra cui i resti dell'antico muro di fortificazione, la Chiesa dell'Annunziata e la Chiesa di Santa Maria della Platea. La bellissima Fontana Cavallina, che un tempo campeggiava un francobollo italiano ed è ufficialmente annoverata tra le 33 più belle fontane d'Italia, si trova ai margini della città vecchia. È in grado di riciclare le acque in abbondanza sia dalla superficie che dal substrato, compensando gli inevitabili fenomeni di erosione della valle.
Oggi è il simbolo di Genzano di Lucania.

Davvero affascinante è il Palazzo De Marinis. Ai piedi dell’antico castello marchesale si lascia ammirare l’antica porta (Porta di Mezzogiorno, XVII) di accesso al centro storico.

A circa 18 km dal paese si trovano le rovine del castello di Monteserico restaurate e ampliate dagli Svevi e spesso visitate da Federico II. È un castello medievale che un tempo sorgeva accanto alla Via Appia che domina la valle del Basentello. La collina di Monte Serico contiene anche resti del Paleolitico attraverso il periodo imperiale romano.

Da vedere: il centro storico, la fontana Cavallina, il Palazzo De Marinis, la chiesa dell'Annunziata, la chiesa di Santa Maria della Platea, la chiesa di Maria SS delle Grazie, la chiesa del Carmine, la Castello di Monteserico, la Porta di Mezzogiorno.

Genzano di Lucania is a town in the province of Potenza, in the Southern Italian region of Basilicata. It is located on a broad plateau in the Upper Bradano Valley on the eastern borders of Puglia region.

The people of “pagus gentianum”, a roman settlement of the VII-VI century B.C., moved to this land because of an epidemic of malaria, giving rise to what is now called Genzano. The primordial inhabited area seems to have been founded on ruins of an old “pagus” of the ancient “Bantia”, probably in the X cent.
Likewise Genzano di Lucania, surrounded by corn fields and shrouded by nature, was influenced by the Normans, like all the other villages in the upper Bradano, and the continuous evolution of the feudatory family who ruled it, following such historical, cultural and artistical changes still alive in the small town.
In fact, in the eleventh century the town came under the control of the Norman Roberto il Guiscardo, and it remained a feudal possession until 1806.

The town is divided in two parts well marked out: the old one with alleys and ancient buildings, placed on a spur, and the new one, built at the top and flat part of the hill, with large streets and modern buildings.

The historical center of Genzano, characterized by a labyrinth of narrow streets and passes, well recalls the Middle Ages and the absolute importance that it held in that period. It contains a number of medieval structures, including the remains of the old fortification wall, the Chiesa dell’Annunziata, and the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Platea. The remarkable Cavallina fountain, which once graced an Italian postage stamp and officially numbered among the 33 most beautiful fountains of Italy, sits on the edge of the old town. It is able to recycle the heavy waters both from the surface and from the substratum, compensating for the unavoidable erosion phenomena of the valley. Today it's the symbol of Genzano di Lucania.

Really fascinating is the Palazzo De Marinis. At the foot of the ancient Marchesque castle you can admire the ancient gate (Porta di Mezzogiorno, XVII) used to access to the historical centre.

At about 18 km from the town there are the ruins of the Monteserico castle restored and enlarged by the Swabians and frequently visited by Federico II. It is a medieval castle that once stood next to the Via Appia overlooking the Basentello Valley. The hill of Monte Serico also contains remains from the Paleolithic through the Roman Imperial period.

Thing to see: the Historical center, the Cavallina fountain, the Palazzo De Marinis, the Church of Annunziata, the Church of Santa Maria della Platea, the Church of Maria SS delle Grazie, the church of Carmine, the Monteserico Castle, the Porta di Mezzogiorno.
