Why do birds sing in spring?
Most of our birds start breeding in spring, after returning from wintering grounds. After the spring migration, males occupy the nesting areas and begin to sing.
Singing serves a twofold purpose: to signal to rivals that a given site is already occupied, and to attract a female to the site.
According to the duration, strength and quality (beauty and variety) of the song of the female, the physical condition of the male, his health and genes, the ability to keep the nesting site and feed her and the chicks are evaluated. The same is done by rivals, assessing in turn the chances of winning a good forage nesting territory.
Many birds that do not fly south are present on nesting sites all year round and mate with females very early, singing not in spring, but in winter or autumn, as, for example, most of our owls.
