Music Production? How to start? What do you need? Can everyone do it today?
This post will answer these four questions -What is music production? How to start? What do you need? and in the end, Can everyone do it today? Also my opinions and recommendations. So let's start!
Music Production?
- By music production, I mean writing and playing music for yourself or for others. Honestly, today music production is a sampling of sample samples of samples, in better cases recording your own instruments which are more organic and better. But for now, this is not important. It is important that I introduce you to the beginning of music production.
How to start and what do you need?
- To get started you need a laptop or computerand buy one of the daws (download it for free). Daw is a digital audio workstation. Something like a digital studio on your computer. In the beginning, it doesn't matter which one you choose, all of them work on the same principle, just a different look and workflow. I personally recommend Ableton Live, especially if you are interested in live act and live mixing. I've been using it for the past 2 years. My friend @antminer use StudioOne which has a different flow but works just as well as Ableton Live. So choosing DAW is your first decision.

- Second thing that you need are headphones or speakers/monitors. It would be nice to have some good pair of headphones or monitors but for the beginning anything is good. At the beginning, I used some cheap speakers I got with the computer and iPhone headphone. Now I use Audio-Technica ATM-m40x with Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 audio interface. I recommend headphones because you can hear everything you do at any time of the day.It is important that they are flat and don't have any bass boosts to know exactly what you are playing. If you buying headphones or monitors you will need external audio interface.
- The third thing you need is the midi keyboard / controller. It would be great to have some keyboards in the beginning and start learning how to play it, makes workflow better and easier and also encourages more creativity. But while you don't get it, you still have a computer keyboard and a mouse with which you can do a lot of good things cause all the notes, chords, beats can be drawn with a mouse or played on the computer keyboard too. For producing and live act I use Novation Launchkey mini 25. Now I need to expand the equipment but for the beginning, it was very good and useful.

Can everyone do it today?
- YES! I mean everyone can try at least, even if you have never played any instruments before with today's technology everyone can do it.
I hope I motivated you to start making music. The first one or two months will be difficult until you figure out basic of your daw software, after that it becomes easier and more interesting so don't give up too fast.
This is it for the first post about music production, next one will be about Ableton Live- Basic thing you need to know about.
PEACE!
This article is very, very, very useful for those who plan to begin with music production.
Great read. Keep up a good work!
Sweet!
I like to see fellow steemains with the same interests, Ableton is a great choice.
I have to add a little bit to this sentence:
"Honestly, today music production is a sampling of sample samples of samples, in better cases recording your own instruments which are more organic and better."
( in my opinion)
altrough there is a lot of truth in that u said.
I'm looking forward to see your work, and maybe do some collabs later on!
I have a little pass-forward game in mind :
What do you think?
STEEM ON!
True, true, I forgot to mention that, a very important thing, all these samples or soundwaves should be modulated to be just what you want. Ableton is better in lots of stuff than other daws, but like I said in every of them you can make good music.
The game sounds interesting.I don't have time right now, I have to learn for college + work.
Thanks for reading the post
Sure thing bro, everything in its own time, we're not rushing anywhere.
Keep it up!
Great introduction to music production world :) Thanks @antoniokarteli Upvoted :)
Thanks for the useful info. 👍
Still fighting with my sound card, MIDI and compatibility issues, but getting there...
What is the problem? I would be happy to help you somehow.
New computer with Windows 10, giving me USB issues, wasn't reading my audio inputs and kept shutting down when trying to edit video. It's all good now, thanks.
Some USB audio interfaces aren't compatible with windows 10. First, check that
if I understand what the problem is.
Microsoft is making me feel like I'm the one that's not compatible with Windows 10. 😭💩
Thanks for the support, 👍 will let you know everything works out.

WOW amazing post. Once I tried to start with music production but I had to stop because I don't have nor laptop nor computer. Can I maybe do music on my mobilephone? What do you think?
Thank you. How did you even start without laptop and computer, on a calculator? HE-HE
Yes, you can do music on a mobile phone, that what I think.
