Buddha Statues in the Exhibition of Goryeo Dynasty

in #meseum6 years ago

There was a room where Buddha statues made in Goryeo dynasty were gathered. As I explained, Goryeo dynasty was founded on the basis of Buddhism. At that time, Buddhism was a kind of ideology unifying Korean people who were divided as a result of the weakness of Shilla dynasty.

Shilla dynasty had survived more than 1000 years. And at the very last years, Shilla kingdom had lost the control power over her territory. So the local powerful generals tried to build their own kingdom.

Wang Geon was the last victor of the civil war. After defeating his enemies, he used Buddhism as a mean of integrating people who had fought each other.

Buddha statue was originated from the Gandara area in India. In the process of transfer, each culture seemed to add their cultural characteristics in making statues.

So those Buddha statues seemed to show well the culture of Goryeo dynasty.

Below are Goryeo dynasty’s Buddha statues.

The Korean National Museum exhibited the Buddha statues of Song Dynasty of China to compare the characteristics each other.

Did you think about the differences between Goryeo and Song dynasty ?

@slowwalker,
Yeah in my country this happened too! Every dynasty has different type of Buddha's statue! I think Mahayana, and Theravada influences also can be found in these statues as well! Great photography and they are very sharp one!

Cheers~

The history of the two had a long and complicated history, included when the Sillas were taken over by the Goryeo dynasty, as they merged into one. They made stronger ties, merging their trading and cultural ties... I believe that was during the Three Kingdoms Period.

Ghingas Khan moved through China, and the son (I believe) headed toward Korea, making Goryeo change its capital city. Mongolia was attacked for decades until they agreed to provide ships and materials for the (failed) Mongolian invasions of Japan several times. During this time and after, Korea then became more and more influenced by their (Mongolian) culture.

Korea would not re-establish their independence for another hundred years when general Yi Song-gye established the new state of Joseon.

Their history and cultural minglings merge and submerge. It has a very interesting history.

Thank you for showing off the merging of the buddha. I wish you a happy day!

One particular I marvel at are the Buddha statues, every single one had seen in the past including these in this post. They are perfect statues that one might imagine them falling from heaven and not man made. Admiration aside, thanks for sharing the cultural background of the Goryeo dynasty

I love the human animals ability to take stone and metals and create their idealized versions of deities and teachers. So many versions and so well done. The gold is so beautiful @slowwalker

Buddhism is one of the oldest religion and during all these years many different countries while accepting it, adopted their own traditional features and that is reflected very much in the Buddha Statue. What I also noticed, the statues right hand that raised and different fingers bent and straighten up. I do not know if there is any meaning of that.

Hello slowwalker - your first tag is not written right - meseum instead of "museum" - just for info

People can think about religion what they want, but i am totally convinced that we human beings are more then just our body. I never had a specific religion which I prefered, because I think in their core there is the same wisdom - RE-LIGIO - a reconnection. Buddhism was always important for me because of its kindness and much more.

In terms of the different dynasties, I am not so familiar with the history of Korea. It seems Wang Geon made the right choice to bring more peace to the country, but after reading his story I also have to admit, that it seems he was trapped to much in his ego, when he wanted to be seen as a Buddha. But I don't know how the history really was... just what I read.

All in all the statues are made wonderfully and with great detail! :-)

nice statue, I like to see the statue

I did not know that history about Buddha being used to bring the two factions together. Thank you for explaining that.
