I read this post and was thinking America sounds ghastly, I'm glad NZ isn't like that. But then I saw this comment!
Yes Auckland sucks, but nobody has to live there. For a good deal try Invercargill, Dunedin, Wanganui, or New Plymouth.
If I was short of cash I'd move to Dunedin, it's like a much smaller and cheaper version of Wellington
