I found your story to be very interesting. Thanks for sharing. I see that we are heading this way in NZ too. There are families living in their cars because they can't find houses to rent and there's no chance they'll be able to qualify for a mortgage. These are people with jobs too. Hard working people who just don't earn enough to afford the ridiculous price of paying rent, power bills, petrol as well as feeding their family. It's sad to think about what things will be like if nothing changes.
I know all about your country's plight. I lived in Auckland for three years and had to have at least four flatmates to be able to afford rent.
I read this post and was thinking America sounds ghastly, I'm glad NZ isn't like that. But then I saw this comment!
Yes Auckland sucks, but nobody has to live there. For a good deal try Invercargill, Dunedin, Wanganui, or New Plymouth.
If I was short of cash I'd move to Dunedin, it's like a much smaller and cheaper version of Wellington
