#Ulog Reflections | How to Destress quickly the Mav Way
Ever had that feeling that you just want to punch something and scream your lungs out. I have and it often can lead to self-destructive tendencies which I have a lot. I once punched a cinder block wall and made a tiny hole and broke my hand. I had to cover the wall with a frame so that they won't notice the damage.
So I was reading something that really made me mad and I could feel my blood pressure shooting up, my teeth grinding and my fingers itching to go keyboard warrior mode and start a flame comment.
I have a really bad temper once it starts and in more than one occasion has gotten me in trouble. So I have developed several methods for me to quickly cooldown before I saw something hurtful or stupid or usually both.
Get away from the source of your stress
Seems simple enough when something is stressing you out then move away from it especially if its a person before you start punching someone.
By being around stressors you elevate your blood pressure, you activate your body's Fight or Flight response which causes spikes in adrenalin which can also spike your aggression levels if you are argumentative like me.
Breathe Deeply and Meditate
If you are unable to leave like if you are in a meeting fret not and sit tight and start breathing deeply and start meditating. I do yoga whenever I wake up and I turn to it whenever I am in a stressful situation.
Breathing deeply calms you down and tricks your brain into relaxing. While doing meditation will help in clearing your mind and refocusing to more positive aspects.
Eating Chocolate
I am not saying that stress eating is okay, but having a piece of chocolate has its benefits of lifting your mood. The taste sends euphoric signals to your brain and helps releases some happy hormones.
I usually have some chocolate always on hand to give as a gift to make someone smile or for myself when I am feeling down.
Taking a long walk and breathing in fresh air
My office is blessed to be near a park and sometimes I get the urge to start slapping people with a steel chair and so instead of being hauled to the police station for assault I tend to walk and breath in the fresh air and be surrounded by trees and grass.
I just let the oxygen fill my lungs and that repetitive movement of one foot after another calms me down.
I covered forest bathing in one post of mine before and although this is not a forest but being around nature has a healing effect on people.
Do something that you like
May it be watching a video to make you laugh or one of my guilty pleasures lately is reading through the entries of the Steemit #comedyopenmic.
It has a diverse set of humor from crass to not knowing if it was so funny that it went beyond your understanding. It has written format, memes, videos and even spoken word so whatever floats your boat you will find it here.
Ever since I have been around @helpies I have been exposed to the world of Steemit #openmic and #coverasteemian. You would not believe the amount of talent in this group and I am still wondering how I ended up there especially for an avocado hating, flag running noob that I am haha.
These are some of my favorites Steemit OpenMic Week 86 @paintingangels -Original NEW Song - "Fly"
Serena the resident cookie giver serenades you with her soft and vulnerable voice and because of that, she won this week's Open Mic challenge!! She is awesome so give her a follow.

Marica is another talented Steemian who uses music to promote Steem which I think is a great thing to do and bring in more talent.
Steem has the amazing way of being able to get an audience, share your music and get paid for it. Gone is the idea of the starving artist as they find value in the blockchain by sharing their art.
So anything that you like that relaxes you and something that does not involve hurting you or another person.
How about you what are some of the ways you destress quickly?

I liked your post here Mav, but I'm itching to know what got you all riled up in the first place :)
I too was blessed with a temper, and a family tendency to self-medicate... a bad combination indeed. After several "learning episodes", I've found that loud music and exercise is the key for me. If I can get my heart racing, not a leisurely walk, but a full on run, with music blaring in my ears, it seems to get the stress out of me. I guess it releases endorphins, but now that you mention chocolate, perhaps that will be my new go-to :)
Ahhahaha it is all Dave's fault but in a good way because it made me think and realize the real deal.
I'd rather be struck blunt force trauma rather than be sugar coated and lied to.
I do that too when I am mad I put on my running shoes and blast my running music and go a couple of kilometres. The combination of the pain and seratonin helps in changing my mood and clearing my head.
Dave!! I should have known haha
You and me both buddy!
Nice tips!
I try to think happy thoughts!
Also keep a stress ball handy!
You can throw the stress ball at the person you're mad at!
Whahahaha what I have is those harder stress balls and a fidget spinner if I throw that I might get sued hahahaha
Oh my a fidget spinner! That's like throwing a shuriken! So cool!!! 😂
Ninjas are awesome and able to do assassination techniques and Vanish! ppoof!
Dude! You're already life hacking! Or maybe you needed to do this to keep your cool? Okay, well, these are all good tips, some of which, like the deep breathing, are ones I've advised family members to do. I have been known in the past to get quite upset, but I think I've mellowed for quite some time now, to where it's more of a slower burn that can be controlled as opposed to something quite explosive. When I do get mad, though, it happens quickly and then I'm over it, either wishing I hadn't got upset at all or wishing I could stay mad longer. Kind of dumb, but that's how it works out sometimes. :)
Hahha my temper is still legendary and often gets me in trouble but I learned to temper it in a way that it is not self destructive and can hurt people. I kinda like my freedom and jail time is not an option I want to try hahahaha.
Deep breathing does wonders especially if I can't get up or have access to my chocolates.
I like the chocolates as it also doubles as bribes to people or when I see them nearing to explode I offer them a chocolate. This is true for down of the people. I work with since sometimes they are in position that they have to talk to a very irate employee.
Oh, I'd say the chocolates are a great idea, for you and for anyone else.
Yeah, I've gotten angry several times in my life but nothing that resulted in jail time, thankfully. The few times I've actually struck a wall or some hard surface did not end well for me (nothing broken, thankfully), but it still hurt. It's just not smart, and in most circumstances, the wall isn't the problem, anyway. So, taking it out on inanimate object is rather pointless and it only serves to emphasize how dumb I was for striking the wall, desk, door, whatever, in the first place.
