A Short Insight on Overcoming Hardship

The question was "How did you overcome the hardest times of your life?"

My answer is as follows:

By Reflecting on how I could use it to my advantage.

Nobody enjoys going through struggle, but it it an intrinsic and inescapable part of life.

And thats a good thing. Here’s why:

If everything was always good from the moment you were born, you’d never have any concept of good to begin with. You wouldn’t know you were standing on the peaks of mountains if there were no valleys to contrast them.

In addition to this, the pain and hardship that struggle provide are some of the best inter-personal teachers that we have.

The negativity and discomfort of these emotions force us to face an ultimatum: Find a way to overcome them, becoming a better version of yourself in the process, or be swallowed whole by them.

So when it comes to hardship, whatever it may be, approach it with the awareness that you can learn from it and it can make you a better, stronger, and more capable individual.

Also, make sure you allow yourself the freedom to feel, and heal, through your pain.

Some hardships are simply harder than others, and some can completely and utterly shatter our hearts without warning. It’s important we acknowledge the pain that arises from this and embrace it whole heartedly. Cry if you need to cry, be broken if thats how the pain makes you feel, but always remember that there will come a time where you need to pick yourself up, so that you might learn from and move past that pain.

I hope this helps you next time you find yourself faced with hardship.

Thank you for your article and making me aware of it. Yes, resilience is an important topic that is very popular at the moment in the world of psychology. I don't want to disagree with this view, but maybe add another and for me even deeper topic. This whole notion of "what doesn't kill you, will make you stronger" and part of Nietzsches philosophy runs very deep in our society. It operates within the presupposition, that the "goal" is to become better and overcome yourself. I have a totally different view on that. What if you don't need to "become better" at all? What if what you are and what you experience in your life as hardships, are not lessons, that are here to make you better, but opportunities to love yourself more the way you are? These is my take on the topic of hardship. Blessing!

Thank you for your reply! : )

And could it not be said that learning to love yourself more is a form of becoming better? When you come to love yourself to a greater degree, you naturally come to take better care of yourself, a consequence of which is becoming a better version of who you already are.

Yes sure, this could also mean to become a better version - it's just in my experience, that this is a natural progression and not something planned or willfully enforced. ❤️

I appreciate your input, would love to see you stop by more often!

Looking forward to more of your work as well : )

Yes, when hardships come, it's true maybe we suffer, maybe we even hate life. But I'm sure in the future, we will look back at these hardships and we will see that it was among the best things that could happen to us because it was an opportunity to grow and be better a person as you said. Actually, I'm reading a book called Antifragile (by Nassim Nicholas Taleb) and the author says:

Given the unattainability of perfect robustness, we need a mechanism by which the system regenerates itself continuously by using, rather than suffering from, random events, unpredictable shocks, stressors, and volatility.

Thanks for this topic!

I've wanted to read anti fragile for a while now! You'll have to let me know your thoughts once you're finished, would love to see what you think about it!

good articles friends, because experience is the most precious treasure that we can get from life, With experience of pain and difficulty we will know how to direct life to be better than before.

Thank you for your input, glad you enjoyed it : )

I remember watching a video by Gary Vaynerchuk about how the greatest poison in our lives is regret. As you said we must always have the space and perspective within ourselves to heal and learn. :)
