After reaching 500 followers and my first 1000 post I think it is time for a deeper introduction to me and my hobby

in #introducemyself7 years ago

I have just reached 500 followers and have been on sttemit for one month also . A big thank you to everyone for making me feel so welcome here. To further introduce myself, I thought you might like to see my hobby, my yard work, my banana plantation,my vineyard, and various fruit trees that take up much of my time. It take a lot of time and effort to maintain it.

First off, I have a huge Mango tree, which produces a ton of very large and extra sweet mango. I use these to make mango salsa, a mixture of mango chucks, tomatoes, onions and peppers. I usually make around a hundred jars of this every year.

I started off with one banana plant, and now have about 20 different varieties from around the world, including large one, small sweet ones, some are hard and need to be fried, and one is like ice creme and can be licked like an ice creme bar. I have about 500 plants now and produce around 5,000 to 10,000 pounds of bananas per year.

This is an interesting photo of a bloom with the fruit first emerging. One quick note: It is officially a berry and not a fruit, since fruits come from trees and berries come form bushes.

My oranges are doing fantastic . They should be ready to harvest around December.

wow! Avocados are loaded and the limbs are hanging almost to the ground. These are Florida avocado and much larger than the ones from California

I have over 20 different varieties of grapes from all over the world. I have already harvested them or the birds feasted on them, one or the other, lol I love being able to show my friends what the different kind of grapes look like. The wine takes a while to mature and will be ready in about 2 years.

In Florida you have to have a key lime tree. So yes, this is a fruit. My tree is crazy and produces key lime all year long. Great for making drinks. I use the green ones to keep a tart taste and the yellow ones to add to cooking for a perfect citrus taste.

The key lime turn yellow as they age

As part of an experiment I have a small coffee bush that is growing to see how they do in Florida

20170821_144155.jpg

I have this Raspberry vine at the end of on the grape line and allow it space to grow on the side wires.

20170821_144205.jpg

Pineapples are planted everywhere, maybe a few hundred of these jokers, Most have all been harvested for the year, but will start new shoots and produce a new pineapple in 18 months.

I love my Mayer Lemons, which are large not so sour, however since they all come to fruition at the same time we had to decide what to do with them and decided Italian inspired limoncello was a good idea. )urs is made with a lot of vodka, oh yes. Have you tried it? We mix the zest of the lemons with a great vodka, allowing the resulting yellow liquid which is also mixed with some simple syrup to create a perfect drink. I also use this often in cooking when the recipe calls for lemon.

My starfruit produce twice a year, in the fall and in the spring. They are insane and produce thusands of these crazy fruits. I have a hard time giving all of them away.

20170821_144358.jpg

20170821_144410.jpg

Unable to use all of them and they constantly have to be picked up from the ground. If you live close tome, please come take some

Fig tree, already harvested for the year, but they are so sweet, it is like heaven eating them

20170821_144510.jpg

I also have plans for the future as I have a cashew tree in a pot and will plant it after the hot season, about another 2-3 months, just to make sure it has a good chance of surviving here.

Hey Johnny! This is heaven !!!! You will never go hungry...and heck, you don't even have a need to buy food or water xD Generally I ate fruitarian, and your fruit selection is awesome!

Reply to this comment so I can upvote your comment--I missed the 1 week time frame to vote this post up...I would give it 100% of my vote!!!

Do you have all of this fruit on 1 land? And how many acres is your land? I'm very curious, as I am looking to have a nice fruit orchard for my family and community :) Thank you!

All of this is on one normal sized lot, something anyone can do. One fruit you might really like is Cashew juice, and very hard to find in the States, but i know some Brazilian stake houses usually have it in their restuarants, and will sell you some. I have looked and looked, and it is only available on line in 55 gal drums.

A normal sized lot... do you mean about 1/4 acre normal Florida home property lot size? Thanks!

maybe 1/4 to 1/2, not big at all. no ornamental trees, etc, all fruit trees and bushes that produce produce as well

Really nice post Sir John. It's good to see a that naturally grown fruit.
Please to see you enjoying your time on Steemit.
Well done getting 500 followers 1000 next dude, good luck and Steem on.

I love making connections and steemit is fantastic for bringing people together. I am now following you and have upvoted your comment as well

lucky man, looks so soulfully healthy and refreshing

It keeps me going, but have to hire help when I travel to keep it under control. I saw your aviator and thought I would mention that my son is in coast guard boot camp, but graduates in one week.

Wow! So many fruit trees.
I would love to have a mango tree as well. Now I have only a small avocado plant at my home. It started to grow in May this year and has only 3 leaves. :)
Upvoted!

it takes a few years for the avocado to grow, but they will. thank you for the upvote and I am now following you, my new friend

Goodness! You have a lot of fruit!

I seem to remember something about cashews, parts of them are toxic (I believe) and so, be careful with that harvest.

As you can see, I followed you back.

thank you, my friend. Cashew tree very hard to grow in Florida since they do not like any cold weather at all. Most do not know, but the cashew nut many enjoy is on the outside of the fruit. The cashew nut I can readily buy at the store. It is the juice from the apple that I am after. It is sweet like mango, but has even more flavor. In South America many mix it with Brazilian rum to make their most favorite drink. Cashew juice is almost impossible to find in the USA, which is why I am so excited about this tree .

Loving your green thumb! 🥑

Well, of course, I do not show the attempts that do not work. I always try fruits from other countries to see if they can stand up to the Florida heat. Do you grow fruits?

Mr Ray... you had mentioned it to me a little while ago but to see it for real is awesome. I would love to have a yard (and the proper climate!) which could grow all these different kinds of fruits. Having your own fruit in your yard is a true luxury.

My grandfather was a landlord actually in Colombia. He had a huge chunk of land on which he grew all kinds of fruit as well. Seeing your photos reminded me of that.

It's just awesome! Own bananas and mangoes! I also care about the garden, but in Russia there is a different climate. I grow broccoli, zucchini and other vegetables growing in vegetable gardens

My wife is from Russia and had a garden house, where she grew many things, especially i remember the apple trees

Your grandfather must have been a fantastic man. I love the fruits, but so much work. what kind of fruits did he grow?

Mainly bananas accompanying the coffee plantation. The typical stuff ;)

I see. what about cashews, did he grows any of these there?

I don't know for sure. I would have to ask my mother. I remember her telling me they had a bunch of different fruits, bananas, mangos, pears, lulo is what I can remember.

When I travel, I always end up making it to the local market and seeing fruits I have never tried before. Columbia is a great place for many fruits.

By getting to know the food, you can really get to know a huge part of the culture. A very good thing to do, I should do that as well in my travels! And yes... there are so many different fruits all around the world that you would otherwise never see, let alone taste...

Super John, well done !!!!

thank you, my friend. I love seeing what others are doing, and gaining so much inspiration from everyone

Hi Sir John, nice to meet you... Congrats for reaching 500 followers... I like all your trees... My Dad used to harvest all these trees... He Passed away 2 and a half years back... You just remind me of him... This is a very good post with lots of fresh fruits... I Followed you.. and upvoted you.... Follow me @onority

Nice to meet you, and I am following you as well. the trees are nice, but so much work

Yeah... I can understand how much effort it needs...

Holy moly, you have mango trees?! Finest fruit in the world!!

That's it, I'm following you. :)

Yes, I love my mangos, and not only are they mangos, there are a special type that are huge and ultra sweet.People beg for the seeds just to start their own trees all of the time, which I always give them away for free.. I am now following you back as well.

I'm drooling now... haha! Awesome, thank you. )
