An Emp attack on the United States or any country for that matter is probably one of the most underrated threats to a countries existence. You don't need thousands of nuclear warheads to nuke the the US but just a hand full of high altitude nukes above the US could knock out the power grid and basically chaos would ensue for many months before power could be restored.

In an extraordinary and sobering report meant to educate the nation on a growing threat, a new military study warns that an electromagnetic pulse weapon attack such as those developed by North Korea, Russia, and Iran could essentially challenge the United States and displace millions.

“Based on the totality of available data,” said the report from the Air Force’s Air University and provided to Secrets, “an electromagnetic spectrum attack may be a threat to the United States, democracy, and the world order.”

The report, titled, “Electromagnetic Defense Task Force,” and the product of a mostly classified summit of officials from 40 agencies just outside of Washington earlier this year, is a forceful call for a new focus on preparing for either an enemy EMP attack or a natural hit such as a solar storm.

A congressional study estimated 90% of the people on the east coast would die in a year after an EMP attack.

Here's a list of possible issues during an EMP attack:

• Nuclear reactors would meltdown due to no power to cool the them.

• 4.1 million people could be displaced due to radioactive fallout from these nuke plants(not to mention the millions fleeing the powerless crime ridden cities).

• civil unrest would start within hours of an EMP attack.

• GPS, Cell Phones, Internet would go dark.

• I could take 18 months or more to turn the power back on.

The article also mentions it might be hard to determine which country launched the EMP attack because devices can be hidden in satellites. I was rumored that the North Korea's first satellite could of be and EMP weapon to attack the US with.

WHAT WOULD STILL BE WORKING AFTER AN EMP ATTACK?

EMP from a Solar Flare:

Probably the greatest threat to power grid is our very own Sun. The Sun can have solar flares or coronal mass ejections that not only wipe out a countries power grid but the entire sun facing half of the planet.

A Carrington event would be devastating on our planet today with all the electronics that control our lives now.

The more we relay on electronics in our everyday survival the more in danger we are from and EMP or solar storm that could knock out the power for months or years and would cause millions and maybe even billions to die. It would be wise if the US and other countries spent some of their tax revenue on hardening the power grid from these possible catastrophes.
